How To Be Happy
A bin full of flower and a shed full of
first-class dry chain wood is enough to
make any man happy. Now the way to
fill the bin is to phone Mr. V. E. . BEAN
to first fill the shed, which be done, for
just half the cosr of other fuel. This
would leave you plenty for the flour and
would help buy the beefsteak and clothes

With a substantlp.l Iftcrease over the
opening ' attendance last year the
doors of the Pendleton academy swung
open Monday and work In that school
is novy- under way, says a Pendleton
paper. For the opening the enroll
ment records show that 15 more stu
dents matriculated than upon the
opening day a year ago.
Because of the good attendance and
general bright prospect for the school.
President Bleakney and other mem
bers of the faculty are well pleased.
Koontz hall Is now entirely filled,, and
Brown Hall, the boys' dormitory, Is
filling up more rapidly than was ex
pected. Last year the total attendance
at the academy wai 107 and If pres
ent prospects continue this figure will
be easily passed this year.
At the Presbyterian church Mon
day evening the annual convocation
address was . delivered the academy
students by Rev. S. W. Seemann, of
La Grande. It was an inspiring ad
dress. " . ' v

lot later than October 15.

Pendleton. Kept. 17. The East Ore-

KailH-nl changes in the present
school laws of the state are der-lred
by the county superintendents and at
the mcftlii Jnxt held at Solern their
Ideas were freely dlsciihscd. At tin
coming session or the legislature an
effort will be made to have t least
some of the new ideas enacted Into
law.
The most radical thing proposed lit
the meeting, according to Superin
tendent Frank K. Welles, who cam
home last evening, l a plan whereby
the county Is miule the unit lor nil
the districts contained therein. I'n
di r this plan the county superintend
ent Is to be elected by a school board
on the same plan a city superintend
ent now serves and all the county
school affair are to be directed from
one general head. uch a plan would
make the county superintendent a
school man Instead of an office man.
However, this Idea will not be pre
sented to the legislature this year as
the superintendents believe that the
people are not yet ready for the
change.
This notice has been pouted by the
chief of police of OiH-an City: "All
owners of doss ivfuse to pay aid
taxes within 10 days from th time he
or she shall be notified, shall be
killed by the said officer according to
ordinance."
