Miss Kate Braden returned home
from Perry Monday, where she has
been the guest of Mrs. James Fields.
Joseph Unebarger Is spending his
spare hours on his fishing pond. He
Is at present scraping It out He does
not contemplate finishing It until the
water In Ladd creek rises. When com
pleted it will be filled with' fish,
which will furnish much joy to fish
ers, swimmers and those who like
scenery.
Our school directors have hired the
Messrs. John and Alex Larm to build
a new fence around the school house.
They will also clean the well. The
well has been thoroughly cleaned and
they are now arranging to build a
wire fence In place of the board
fence. School will begin Monday,
with Miss Dora Murdock, from Mon
mouth, as teacher.
Mrs. Mary Rogers has her new cot
tage completed, except painting.
Miss Mabel Counsell spent Thurs-
day and Friday of last week in upper
Ladd canyon at the home of Mrs.
Lawrence Drumsmlth, and while there
visited the sawmill. The mill Is much
better since It has been re-eqnlppcd.
William Winn has bought property
In La Grande and Is moving there to
reside.
Theodore May and family expect to
move to Cove In a few weeks to make
their future home.
A Powerful Pump.
At the Dan mine In the Virtue dis
trict east of Baker City, there has just
been Installed .a Gould pump of ISO
gallons capacity per minute In the
station at the I0O-foot level.
The pump Is In operation and It
workse to perfection, keeping the shaft
and underground workings tree of wa
ter. As deep sinking goes on, a new
ta.lon every 100 feet fill be cut and
the pump lowered to It.
It Is pleasing to note the progress
being made at the Dan and the prac
tical management In charge. The new
mill will soon be completed. In the
meantime practical development pro
greases and when the mill Is ready to
drop stamps there win be -era reserves
of sufficient quality to Insure a very
encouraging- monthly output of gold.
