Early Thursday morning a merry
party of five of La Grande's young
ladles left the MenJIrs camp on Dixie
flat for an' early gallop on their
ponies over the hills. They rode sev
eral miles before they fully realized
that they had left befrye breakfast.
But presently It dawned on them that
they felt like eating and knowing they
were not far from Hilgard, decided to
take breakfast, so they set out briskly
for the little lumber town, and, nat
urally, called nt the hotel for break
fast, only to meet with disappoint
ment, "No meals served." So then
not giving up In despair, they were
piloted to the section house for break
fast, but still more sorrow awaited
the now discouraged party, by receiv
ing the answer to their lnulry for
breakfast. "Too late; meals served on
time." Give up? No. No such a
though with the' party, so they wan
dered around until they came to the
square" house, where they Inquired for
breakfast and found Mrs. Charles
Hswes. who Is ever ready to lend a
helping hand to needy as well as the
hungry ones. Breakfast was quickly
prepared for the now Increasing appe
tltes, consisting of fried potatoes,
choice bacon, fresh eggs, delicious hot
biscuit and butter, fragrant coffee
with rich cream. Well, now, the girls
did ample justice to breakfast. After
feasting for some time, paying the hos
tess generously for the kindness,
thanking her one and all again and
again, the party went on Its way re
joicing, not sadder but happier end
wiser girls, knowing next time where
to go when hungry. The party con
sisted of Misses Stella Oliver, Imogen

Haines Puts nil Style,
Hnlnes Is putting on tots of airs
lately. This week the hitching racks
were treated to a coat of whitewash.
We did not learn the cause of surh
action, nor whether-It was an official
act of the city government. Possibly
the whitewash was ' applied as a dis
infectant or a sort of antiseptic. In
any event, it Is symbolic of the purity
of the city, and the country horse
which Is forced to stand and chew
one of these racks half the night
should feel highly honored. Haines
