V. M. Dobbin bought a $9000 farm
above Washougai, Wash., and will
move his family there in a few days.

attend Normal school this winter.
Andrew Wilkinson Is showing a

out of danger. .
Miss Effie Billings returned from
the Willamette valley this week, ready
to take up her school work for the fall
and winter. Miss Billings has been
employed in the La Grande schools
for the coming term.
O. P. Pratt was In La Grande Sat
urday Inst. While ab.seht he found a
man who is willing to take $5000 stock
In a cannery at Union. Mr. Pratt' Is
very enthusiastic over the cannery
proposition, and there Is certainly no

ing her of the serious Illness of one
of her younger brothers at the family

J. F. Bater, who has had charge of
the Union flouring mill for the past
few years, arrived down from that city
Monday. , Mr. Bater will have charge
of the flouring mills both at Inibler
and Elgin, and will make his home In
this city. As soon as. a suitable resi
dence can be procured, the family will
follow Mr. Bater.

It was not long before he was lan
guishing In the strong arms of the
law In an over-ripe condition, con
trary to the peace and dignity of the
city of Elgin. Accordingly he was ar
raigned before Recorder Denham and
fined $10,, which he paid. He Is the
first man who has, been arrested In
this city since the local option law
went Into effect on July 1. Elgin Re

First Week of School. :
The first week of the Sacred Heart
academy came to a close last evening;
and for the opening week the attend
ance was favorable. Additional stu
dents will come In later in the fall,
when farm work will allow parents to
send their children In to secure an
education.
