Pendleton, Sept 4. -The ". East
Oregonlan said last night:
One of the most dastardly crimes
this town has ever suffered was com
mitted last nigh: when the Alta Hou
and stable were maliciously set afire
by an unknown wretch. By his act h'3
Impel lleiV the lives oi a score of peo
ple within the hotel, burned eight
Worses to death and brought financial
ruin to'Sam Bltner, owner of the
property.
Tho fire was started about 11:30 last
nlsht and te best witness to the cir
cumstances surrounding the origin Is
Pete Schafer, a young man who was
sitting with Miss Town on the front
porch of the Johnnie Town home at
the time.
Firebug Was Seen.
According to Schafer.he and MIfs
Town saw a man come stealthily down
the street from the side of the Alia
House just a moment before the fire
was seen. The fellow tip-toed until
almost In front o" the young people,
whom he did ncl see, and he then
broke Into a run. On reaching Webb
street he turned towards the business
section, Ftll! running.
" A Disastrous liliizc.
The fire was started in a shed be
tween the Alta House and the feed
stable. It was a shed In which slops
from the hotel were placed and it con
nected the hotel with the stable. By
reason of Its location it was the Ideal
place for a man to start a fire If ho
wished to burn the stable and hotel.
From the little shed the flames
spread rapidly to both the stable and
the hotel, though the barn burned the
faster. The barn extended from one
end of the block to the other and the
entire structure was an easy prey to
the flames. Being of dry lumber and
filled with hay. it burned like powder
when the fire once gained headway.
Eight Horse Burned.
When the fire started the big sta
ble was completely filled with horse
and vehicles. Nearly 80 head of horse.-
were tied In .the stalls, every stal!
lacing taken. Those who arrived on
the srene early stw the peril of the
horses and rushed In to free them.
Hut the fire was so strong nt the ex-
-erne west end of the barn that heir
could not reach the frantic animals
ind elRht of them were burned In the!"
stalls. By hard and plucky work on
the part of eaper volunteers the re
mainder nf the horses were goiter
loose and they ran out of the bnrn.
Alta II'mwc Destroyed.
While the five made slower head
ny on the hotel It was no less suit
. It dest 'UcUveness. Commencing
t the southwest coiner the flames ate
heir way Into the hntlry and within
i fvy minutes tho old farm hotel was
'mined. Though' seme of the frame
'.tlj' standing the ruin. Is wra that
rorthless.' All inmates escaped safely.
liiiivr Hit Hnnl.
I'pon Sam Bltner. owner of the Al
rx House, and the stable, falls a heav;J
loss, and today Mr. BItner has hn
sincere sympathy from his friends am
acquaintances. The hoel and stabk
with the entire contents was worth In
he vicinity of 20,000 and the prop
erty was' practically a total loss. II.
