Loral Land Offk-r Line Has Trouble
Aside - From ,. Wcarino Many
Squaitent Hair Gone on Section in
Question Since Land Was Thrown
Oicn to Settlements Are They Bona
ride Squatters, la the Question.
Among the things that are worrying
the weary members of the line-up at
the land office, anxiously waiting for
September 15. when their long vigil
will come to an end, is the. question of
squatter rights. Since the section of
land on which these score or so In
tend to file, was thrown open to set
tlement and ordered open for entry on
the 15th inst., many squatters have
bestirred themselves into Wallowa
county, and log cabins are fairly
springing up on all desirable locations.
The question arises, .'Will such squat
ters have preference rights over .hi
members of the line here in La
Grande?" The general opinion is that
:h y have not, and that the line here
in Xm rir.n " t; 1.- fK ,;
erence In view of the fact that these
men will be the first to make entry.
Of course, the bona fide squatter who
has lived on his claim Irt the section
at stake, will be given his 90 days' fil
ing preference right, but there Is some
question that this w 111 hold true on
squatters who have settled since the
proclamation was IsHued, throwing
this section open to settlement-
A great majority of th men In th
line have avoided bona fide g'luattere
and It is not thought there will be any
conflicts In that way, as they wero
shrewd enough to keep off squatted
land.( Eut since they have been over
the land and have come here to form
the filing, line, many cabins have
sprung up In the heart of the woo-1s
and, of course, will conflict with the
claims to lie made here.
But they are hopeful that the gov
ernment officials will rule that Mie
new squatters are mere lran?greHors.
They claim that no other version can
confidently be placed on their ac'-n.
They have gone n there since the pro
clamation was Issued, apparently, an'l
can. therefore, not have any legiti
mate rights ov:r others. If they have,
the whole matter can be sifted down
to a question of partiality. The term
Is unknown to th6 government, hence
the conclusion that the squatter who
went on the land plnce the date oT
opening for settlement will be dis
placed by the men who have adopted
the channels of proccedure prescribed
by the department of the Interior.
