unbroken supremacy, ridicule the Idea
that they will not again sweep the

democrats proclaim that their party

pects so bright since 1892, and that
victory In November Is as good as cer
tain. The prohibitionists now less
than ever a negligible factor In In
diana politics expect to make the
most vigorous campaign In their his
tory and believe that for the firs:
time they will break Into the stau
legislature. The populists, stimulat
ed by the nomination of a Vlncennes
man for the vice-presidency, are con
fident of making the best showing
since the organization of the party.
The socialists, with an Indlanlan at
the head of their ticket, are similarly
optimistic. And the Independent j
avowedly regard the Hoosler state at
one of the most promising fields fo:
their propaganda. If the plans an'

There are, at any rate, half a dozen
factors In the situation which promise
to make the fight hotter and the out

W. Kern. Everybody understand
that Mr. Kern had no particular claim
to his party's consideration except In
so far as his nomination might be ex
pected to help democratic prospects In
his own state. At Mr. Bryan's Insti
gation he was placed on the ticket at
Denver for this express purpose, and
the responsibility for the carrying of
Indiana has been laid absolutely upon
his shoulders.

WOMEN'S CLUB PUN SOME
SPLENDID ATTRACTIONS
This fall, the exact date has not yet
been designated, the State Federation
of Women's clubs will be in La
Srande, and to provide the necessary
neana for their entertainment Is one
of the problems which Is now con
"ronting the Ladles' Neighborhood
olub and the Tuesday Musical.,
The Neighborhood club Is prepar
ing to give a home-talent theatrical
production, entitled ' the "Dream of
Fair Women," by Tennyson. Among
the leading characters will be Mrs. A.
u. Richardson, as Cleopatra, MIsf
Jean McDonald, as Helen of Troy; Mrs.
J. T. Richardson,' as Iphigenla; Miss
Ethel Davis, Jeptha's daughter; Mrs.
-V. il. Hush, as Rosamond. Georgr
Cochran will read the lines, and among
the many others who will take part
are Mesdames Molltor, Scroggin, Po
Itick and the Misses Florence McCall
t.nd Ruth Russell.
This will be preceded by a curtain
-iser, a burlesque on "Romeo and
Ijllet."
Mrs. A. T. Hill will appear In mon-
logue and the music will be from
lennyson. The ladies have been do
ing considerable practicing already,
and the date will be announced in the
near future.
The Tuesday Musical Is preparing
to give a party a few weeks later.
This promises to be one of the society
events of the season, and the ladies
hope by their combined efforts to
raise no less than 1250 or $300, which
will be required to entertain the 60
or more delegates from all portions
of the slate, who will be In attend
ance. There are usually as many vis
itors as delegates. La Grande is for
tunate In bejng honored with the state
.'ederatlon, and we should take suffi
cient Interest to see that the ladles

United States, is scheduled to speak
here on political day of the district
fair. By reason of his high standing
In the ranks of his party, his presence

the Pendleton East Oregonian.

didate may be here was. received this
morning by Judge Fitzgerald, secre
tary of the fair commission. He re
ceived a letter from J. P. Newel), state
chairman of the prohibitionists, say
ing that Mr. Watklns Is to be In Ore
gon during the campaign, and that he
would endeavor to have him appear
here during the fair week.
Should he be unable to do so some
other national figure In prohibition
circles will be sent here.
