Carl Rider of Seattle, a former trav
eling salesman, who visited this city
frequently, became convinced that this
wag one of the bent business points-In
the northweeit, and decided to open a
clothing store here and has leased the
room In the Sommor building formerly
occupied by the Castle saloon on De
pot street. The front will be changed
and "modern plate glass will take the
place of the present windows.
Mr. Rider loft last night for Seattle
and expects to return Tuesday."

company of Mexico. The ' company
as 80,000 acres of land, S000 acres
In rubber trees nearly S years of age.
Next January they make their first
tap and expect to get a halt pound of
rubber from each tree. As rubber Is
worth $1.26 per pound In New Tork,
and as It only costs 12 H cents per
pound to grow It, the company thinks
It will soon have a bonanza.
STATE FAIR NOTES.
The Greater Oregon state fair, Sep
tember 14-1$, will this year be the
largest and best In the history of the
northwest.
McElroy's band, consisting of 25 ex
pert musicians, has been, engaged to
play every day during the week of
September 1 4-19 at the Oregon state
fair at Salem.
Eight counties of Oregon have sig
nified their Intention of providing
large exhibits for the state fair. The
counties to participate are Clatsop,
Columbia, Clackamas, Marlon, Linn,
Lane, Benton, Multnomah and Tarn
hill.
One of the feature of the Greater
Oregon state fair will be the herd of
eight performing Shetland ponies,
which Is owned In Fresno, Cal. The
ponies will be raced every day at the
fair, with boy jockles, the distance to
be one-fourth of a mile. None of the
Shetlands la more than 41 Inches high.
The ponies will be at the service of
the children during the day and a
rid will be on of the delights of the
big fair for the youngsters.
"Meet in In the Corral" wilt be the
password for thousands of pleasure
seekers at the Greater Oregon state
fair. The "Corral!" Is the amusement
and concession street at the big expo
sition. Sideshows, stands and many
of the restaurant on the grounds will
be located her. Numerous free acts
and feature are being signed up. The
"Corral' la a clean and legitimate at
