London, Aug. 27. Russian refugees

birthday celebration, It is stated that

...i'.h. The manuscript of the book
has been read by an English friend of
Tolstoi, who states that It is perhaps
the most terrible arraignment of smart
society ever written. Dealing with
the frailties and follies of fashionable
women and the primal sins and pas
sions of men. It Is declared to be even
more powenui n.u wurwnlna"
and "The Kreutzer Sonata."
"Father Serglus" Is the title of the
new novel, which will only see the
light of day after the eyes of the au
thor have been closed forever. It Is
the story of a wealthy guardsman,
nomlnerit In 8t. Petersburg society,
ho becomes engaged to a typical, so
lely girl of the Russian capital. For
a time the ocurse of true love runs
smoothly, and the guardsman Is se
renely happy In the thoughts of a hap
py future. Shortly before the mar
riage, however, the young man dis
covers the maiden, while pretending
extreme Innocence and declaring that
she loves only her betrothed, has been
carrying on a clandestine "affair"
with a Russian court personage and
that her Innocence Is only an affecta
tion covering depths of depravity. The
rage of the young man at this tragic
ending of his dreams of wedded bliss
affords opportunity for fierce Tols-
tolan rastlgatlon of society women,
with the Intimation that the girl Is
but a type common among the femi
nine devotees of smart socloty everywhere.
