relatives. One' showing the old town.
now generally known aa South La
Grande, and what waa 'then the new
town. When these photos were taken
there was a large amount of vacant
land between the two, and Fourth
street was mora In fancy than reality.
The other picture shows Jefferson
avenue and the railroad shoo, nn
round house. The old-timers will Im
mediately recognize Wllber's Hverv
stable which occupied the lot upon
works. Porter's hotel Was whr h
Mint saloon building now stands, or
ratner aid prior to the" June election.
Klrtley's barber shop is recognized as
a landmark by many and the Palace
saloon building Is the 'only building
on the row that remains when the
photo was taken.
A few hundred feet west of what I.
now the Fir street railroad crossing,
were situated the stockyards.
The little depot building was on the
opposite side of the track.' The ele
vated coal bunkers were different. The
cars did not enter It and the little
switch engine which did the work
then looks like a baby as well as
do the box cars standing on a side
track, as compared with those now in
use.
The picture also shows the old
creek or irrigating ditch which ran
zig-zag through the city before the
city covered It through the alley be
tween Jefferson and Adams avenues.
This section of Jefferson avenue was
not graded and shows to what .otpnt
that portion of the city had to bo filled
to bring It to Its present condition.

these photos and they may now be
seen in the window of James R.
Smith.

Attorney Dan Sheehan, who lives In
the Wallowa section In a vlllaire near
the city of Wallowa, called Enterprise,
is in the city today on legal mnttern.
In order to forestall a terrific as
sault from the Wallowa attorney, we
take pleasure In correcting the above
saying, rather, that Mr. Sheehan 1
from Enterprise, the most enterprising
city in the county of Wallowa. Mr.
Sheihan's pet hobby Is to' dwell on the
lines of demarcation that exist In his
county. It Is common error to speak
of Wallowa when the speaker means
Lostlne, Joseph, Wallowa town, or
even Enterprise. The judge affirms
that W sllowa town Is no more Enter
prlHe than Union is La Grande. He
never could see why such broad terms
are being used to designate places In
that fertile section of Oregon. "There
Is a Wallowa county, a Wallowa cltv.
a Wallowa valley." says the attorney
and ha and many others of his kins
men would prefer more specific
names In the future. Wallowa countv
and Its Inhabitants have outgrown a
primitive age and are now worthy of
as much specification as Union coun
ty.
