name. The following communication
tells it
Island City, Aug. 1. (To the Edi
tor.) Tou ask me to answer how La
Grande received Its name. , I will do
the best I can. It Is nearly 41 years
ago. I cannot refer to the diary you

winter of '61 and '63, as I quit In the
spring of '62, for I had too much
other business. I kept a hotel, store.
saloon, butcher shop, livery and feed
stable, sold oats at 15 cents a pound,
sheaf oats at 60 cents a sheaf; meal
were 1 1 each and beds, or rather
rooms, 60 cents. Patrons had to fur
nish their own blankets when crowd
ed, as our patronage varied from one
to 60 dally. The way La Grande re
ceived its name was by calling a mass
meeting for the purpose of naming the
town. It had been called by the name
of Brownsville, Brownstown, etc. Af
ter the meeting was called to order, I
was elected chairman, being the first
time 1 had ever held a similar position.
Tou can Judge how near we came to
following parliamentary rules.- Sev
eral names were suggested, a man by
the name of Dorse some kind of a
Frenchman suggesting the name of
La Grande. After some discussion,
a vote was taken, "La Grande" receiv
ing the highest number of votes. That
Is how the city received Its name I
remember Mr. Dorse gave us quite a
talk on the subject, why it Bhould be
named La Grande," thBt the word La
Orando meant something beautiful. 1

meeting; they have alt left or passed
to the unknown realms.

manager for the Morning Star, left
today for Waltsburg, Wash., where he
will Install an up-to-date moving lc
ture outfit and will be Joined next
Friday by Bert M. Hutchinson, who
until Tecently has been employed with
the Amalgamated Sugar company
here. Mr. Hutchinson will have a half
Interest in the concern.
Mr. Bennett has been In the news
paper field of this city for nearly
year, and has proved himself a hustler
of the first caliber.
The Junior member of the firm Is
also an active young man of business
ability and there Is no reason why the
new venture should not prove success
ful to them. '
