BACK ' FROM
LOlid TRIP
Having ridden nearly 400 miles on
horseback through the wilds or Oregon
and Washington, having seen peaks
they had no idea existed west of the
Rockies, crossing trails and mountain
passes that thrilled the riders, Mayor
M. K. Hall, Charles Vurplllat and Will
Church Returned Inst evening from a
two weeks' outing on the Walla Walla
river, and two branch streams of that
river, the Skip llorton and the Rough
Works.
Two weeks ago yesterday the party
left La Grande on horsebaok bound
for the Walla Walla river via Tollgate.
They eventually reached their destina
tion and after a few days' rest, set to
fishing. Though the catches were suf
ficient to meet Immediate demands,
they report the stream well fished out.
Some of their rides through the high
mountain , passes were extremely
thrilling, and all of the party will re
member the vacation as one of the
most exciting and pleasing they have
Indulged in. Others who hnd crossed
an especially hazardous trull, ahead
of them, lost their pack horse. The
animal fell from a cliff, meeting death
when In struck the rorks below.
The mayor will be In his official
seat at the council meeting Wednesday
night and Is now ready to resume his
practice after needed rest.'
Hurt by Falling Barn.

falling timbers of a barn blown over
Wednesday evening, and was badly
bruised and shaken, says the North
Powder News.
The barn was a shed affair which
Mr. Schultx was putting upon his
homestead, six miles below North
Powder. His wife and her daughter,
Mrs. W. U Meeker of Portland, who
la visiting them, were helping him.
The windstorm blew up late in the
afternoon, but they kept at work, a
the burn swmed fur enough along to
withstand It When they felt It give
way Mrs. Meeker caught up her child
and. with Mr, Hermits, sprang clear of
it. Mrs. Schultx was knocked down
and probably would have been seri
