Ira D. Han key, the world-wide
known singing evangelist, passed away
this week at his home In New Tork,
at the age of 18. He not only was a
great singer, but a great musical au
thor. It Is said that his collection of
aongs known as the - Gospel Hymns,
reached a circulation of more than
to.000,000. Nothing before or since
has ever resulted In such enormous
sli'S. Two of his songs, the "Ninety
and Nine" and "When the Mists Have
Rolled Away" are known and sung
today the , world round. Sankey's
name cannot be spoken but Intuitively
the name of Dwlght L. Moody Is taken
In connection, as these two great re
ligious teachers were associated to
gether so many years that their names
are almost synonymous, During the
past five years Mr.. Sankcy has been
blind, but up to the time of his death
wss engaged In writing sacred music.
He received a great Income from his
productions, but the greater part he
gave awny towards worthy Institu

gossip from the woods. Charles Mer
eh'son, who was seriously Injured
some time-ago, and Is yet forced to
walk with crutches, and "Richard,"
the Bay family's pet canine, were
picking huckleberries last Friday and
had reached a desolate spot In the
dense woods surrounding the sum
mit The dog, which was rambling on
ahead of the picker, came to a sud

henrj serenely picking more huckle
berries In a moment than two human
beings could In the samo length of
time. When Mr. MerchlsoV atten
tion , was called to the cause of the
fright which the lap dog received, he
did some tall thinking. His weapons
were In camp, and his method of loco
motion slow. Fortunately the bear
made off into another huckleberry
patch, leaving the frightened dog and
the somewhat bewildered Individual
In peace. '

Indiana Find Heady Sale of Fruit on

The huckleberry crop on the sum
mlt of the Blue mountains is limited
this year, and even what did ripen
are now well picked. Campers at
Kamela find that It Is necessary to go
several miles Into the heart of the
mountains to find quantities worth
while picking. In the wilds, of course,
Mr. Indian has reaped his harvest and
the whits men are finding but few
left. The redmen find ready sale of
their fruit at a dollar per gallon, as
pickers find It much ensler to buy
them at that price than to spend the
energy necessary In picking them. As
a rule, the limited supply Is of a
splendid grade, ...

The management of the Pastime
theater has ordered a fine now electric
sign which will bo swung over the en
trance door. It Is 1 feet long and will
spell out the word "Pastime" with In
candescent light globes. It will be an
attractive sign and will aid In light
ing the popular thoroughfare at
night.
Halifax Celebrate.
Halifax, N. 8., Aug. 17. In connec
tion with the arnual meeting of the
Maritime Board of Trade, a celebration
of the ISO th anniversary of the es
tablishment of responsible govern
ment in Nova Scotia was commenced
here today.
Cateh Black Hand Louder.
Chicago, Aug. 17. Vincent Craps, a
Sicilian, alleged to be the leader of
the Mafia, was arrested today In the
act of getting a box supposed to con
lain 11000 from under the sidewalk
where It was placed by Benedette Caro
a wealthy Italian grocer. Caro In
formed the police that he received
threatening letters from a Black Hand
society demanding $1000 under pain
of dynamiting.
ROAD OF MANY BRIDGES.
Now Itoad to Average More Than a
Bridge to the MUe,
Chicago, Aug. 17. Through service
will be Inaugurated on the St. Paul
road's Pacific coast extension late next
year, according to a statement made
by a high official today. The road
will break all records by building 117
bridges In lit miles of track.

viduals In the city today Is James H.
Wood, of Enterprise, who came here
Saturday night to buy some land in
an Isolated tract that was sold at pub
lic uuctlnn this morning. Mr. Wood
had lounged about the land office all
morning, but at 10 o'clock, when the
sale took place, he was .In .an lee
cream parlor drinking a glass of lem
onade. ; The sale ' was started and
James E. Wood of Summerville, was
the only bidder, securing air the lund
he wanted at 11.25 per acre. .When
Mr. Wood (James H..) returned a
moment later, he found his particular
piece of land gone.

San Francisco, Aug. '17. Two 19-year-old
highwaymen held up William
Lee early today and when he failed
to obey orders, beat him to death. Lee
was going home. He thought the rob
bers were drunk and walked on. He
was then felled by a bUiek.lr.ik and
kicked. He was taken to the hospital
unconscious.

Sister Dead.
Mrs. L. Faus received information
this afternoon that her sister, Mrs.
Masterson of Malheur county, died
this morning. Mrs. Faus will not be
able to attend th funeral. Deceased
