The occasion for this optimistic out
burst was the opening of the Commer
cial Travelers' Interstate Prosperity
congress, which convened todayln the
rooms of the Merchants' association.
Acting Mayor McGowan welcomed the

men, although many merchants,
buyers and representatives of Import
ant manufacturing and Jobbing Inter
ests were present. ,
Later the congress adjourned to the
assembly rooms of thew Metropolitan
Life building, where addresses deal
ing with methods for restoring and
maintaining prosperity were delivered
by Henry Clews, E. C. Simmons of St.
Louis, and the rational officers of the
Travelers' Protective union end the
United Travelers of America.
This evening the Liberty theater
will bo turned over to the deelgfates,
who will witness the production of a
new play entitled "The Traveling
Man." The congress has secured the
entire house for the evening.
Tomorrow Comptroller Metz will
take the officers of the congress for a
sail, while the deelgates will make an
excursion to Manhattan Beach. The
concluding feature of the congress will
be a banquet at h Victoria hotel, at
which Mayor r.w of Milwaukee,
Lewis Nixon and others will respond
to prosperity toasts.
The Women's League of New Tork
hns been working strenuously to make
tomorrow a "prosperity day" In real
ity by appealing to employers to take
back as many as possotble of the army
of the unemployed.
Dozens of firms have agreed to give
employment to women on that date,
According to the statement Issued by
the president, Mrs. Belle Revelra, New
Tork state hns 750,000 women who
must earn their dally bread. After a
careful canvass Mrs. Lydla Kingsmlll
Commander, chairman of the commit,
tee on prosperity, estimates the num
ber of unemployed working women In
New Tork state at 75,000. Mrs. Com
mander Is confident that one-half of
this number can be employed.
Several manufacturing firms have
already assured the league that the
will Increase, the number of their w
men employes.
