THE EXAMS.
Close to SO school teachers were at
the Central school building this morn
ing to take ' the examinations for
teachers' certificates. There are eight
who are taking the state paper exam
inations and the rest are after the
county certificates. ' County Superin
tendent E. E. Bragg Is conducting the
examinations and believes a large per
cent of the applicants will be success
ful. Following Is a list of those who
took the examinations today, the first
class being for county teachers, and
the second group for state certificates:

TRAIN CAUSES DISCOMFORT.
Pendleton Party Sits Out the Night

Life In the mountains during the
good old summer time Is not all
pleasure, according to the following
from the Pendleton East Oregonlaa:
There are about 100 mighty "sore"
people in town today as a result of a
broken passenger engine on the O. R.
& N. near Durkee Monday night
Beginning at La . Grande and ex
tending the entire length of the O. R.
ft N. system to Bingham Springs sta
tion, there were waiting Pendlnton
lans at' every station last night and
the train on which they rode to Pen
dleton this morning did not arrive un
til t o'clock. "And thereby hangs a
tale." - . ' ' .
Early In the evening No, S was re
ported on time, but at 8:30 the pas
senger engine broke down near Dur
kee and a slower freight engine was
taken to bring the train Into La
Grande. At that time the train was
marked up an hour late. , .
Then began the cheerful work of
keeping warm at the Pendleton camps
at Meacham and Bingham Springs. It
was a cold night on the mountains
and wood was scarce and It was diffi
cult to keep the bonfires replenished
while waiting for the train.) But the
weary watchers, grown angry long ago,
still piled on the wood and still lis
tened for tho whistle of the tialn.
But still ths freight engine lsgged
with the heavy train and It was 1J:S0
when the first bunch of Pendleton
people found seats and closed their
eyes for a brief snooze leaving La
Grande. . .
It was about I: SO when the last
weary Pendletonlan on he mountain
division of the O. R. ft N. climbed Into
the coach, madder, colder and perhaps
wiser than ever before this season.
