PROSPERITY ON EVERY HAND.
Julius Kruttm-linitt, Prominent Direc
tor of llurrlman Linen, is Pleaded.
Portland, Ore., Aug. (."Enormous
crops are being harvested throughout
the country. Farmers never were
more prosperous. I confidently expect
this situation will assist materially In
restoring the general business pros
perlty that prevailed prior to the ft'
nanclal flurry last October," said Jull
us Kruttschnttt, .director of matnte
nance aVid operation of the Harrlman
lines, who reached Portland today
from San Francisco.
"Since the financial disturbances
last fall traffic business has Improved
very slowly. I was surprised at the
effects of this panic In at least two
respects;, first, at the extent to which
business was affected; and second, the
time It required to restore former bus
iness conditions. But the panic had
its benefits. It enabled large corpora
tlons to catch up with their work and
remove the congestion, which handi
capped their various systems. The
railroads now are better equipped and
able to handle the same volume of
business satisfactorily that a year ago
practically tied up all the railroads.
Mr. Kruttschnttt declined to discuss
politics.
FORCE WANTS REST.
Tlwj Circus Fever lias Firm Grip on
Kewnpaper Force This Afternoon.
That epidemic called 'circus fever
has had firm grip on all departments
of The Observer today and If the read
era find the paper short of Its cus
tomary bulk of rattling good news, all
blame must be shouldered by the clr
cus. The news-gathering staff has
been too occupied with studying the
animal up on the hill to compile the
usual grist of dally happenings. The
mechanical force likewise wanted to
get "spruced up" for this evening's
performance and arrangements were
mad to close the forms early.
