Barnum & Bailey Shows Revive Street
Sjxvtaj'lc.
' - . ' ,
The Barnum & Bailey greatest show
on earth, has again established a pa
rade as a part of each morning's pro
gram. It will pjesent on the day of Its
visit to La Grande a street spectacle
different and far superior to those of
the pnat. , It Is three times the length
of Its predecessors and represents 10
times the capital Invested.
The elimination of the parade wns
deemed advisable some years ago' in
view of the policy of the management
never to repeat Itself, and there being
at that time a scarcity of new attrac
tlona throughout the World worthy of
a place In the Barnum & Bailey spec
tacle. The agents of tho show, sta
tioned In every country In the world,
were instructed to keep an eye open
for novelties; artists, designers, prop
erty builders and mechanics were set
to work at -the foreign workshops of
the company at Stock and Trent, Eng
land, the aim In view being to create
and build a spectacle and costume it
and people It with the ooei uu ,
novel features the world could aup-
Ply.
The fruit of those labor and the ex-
pendlture of .fortune I found In this
season' parade. It has not the allKhU
est resemblance to other parade. It
excela anything ever attempted In Its
beauty and Its variety.
The tapestry and throne rugs used
were woven In Persia and Turkey, the
ooatume were made in France, the
laces, acarfs, flag and banner are
from the loom of China and the anl
mal dena and wagons were made In
Germany. The parade employs about
1500 men, women and children, . 700
horses, a hoBt of camels and nearly
all the elephants in captivity.

Tho management of the Conductor's
excursion for next Sunday, Is facing
a peculiar dilemma. Last evening the
management received a telegram from
Union stating that there were 300
people In that city who wanted trt go
to the Looking Glaus park with the
excursion and that Union would guar
antee 100 passengers If a special train
would be run to that place. The con
ductors are anxious to accommodate
t'nlon In this matter, but are retleen
In doing so lest they leave people on
the 1a Grande platform. Then ftsrnln.
they do not wish to refuse the t'nlon
request ami then be foiled hv not hnv
Ing their trains loaded when thev
leave with La Grande people.
No definite action has been taken
liy the conductors as yet. In fact may
not be until Saturday, when the ad
vance vale of tlrkets will show ap
proximately how many are going from
this city. '
