The Golden West Carnir.nl cT!rt!riy
which' closed its doors In this city last
Saturday night, became tangled in the
meshes of the law before It got away
to" Baker' City, Its next destination.
The lepal troubles arose over fiillure
on the part of the manager to pay a
33.20 bill at , the La, Grande Iron
,works for some iron tent stakes. When
asked to pay the trifling sum, the
manager accused one of his employes
of ordering the, stakes without the
manager's sanction, hence the reti
cency In paying the bill. Manager Fitz
gerald saw the futility of trying to
max the payment, and late Saturday
night had tho company attached. The
large tent was left standing by request
of the law, while the other tents were
torn down that night. In the Interim
the managers were ' attempting ' to
cere the officers of 'the law, in the
form of Constable 1. w. uo.i
that individual would stand for no
"bullying" and held the tent. At mid
night last night, the manager notified
Mr. Faulk that the bill would be paid.
The transaction took place In the dead
of night. The cost of attachment and
other fees amounted to 217.
Wheat Selling Rapidly.
There was a large lot of wheat sold
yesterday In Pendleton, some of the
sales not being Intended for the pub
lic. The highest realized Is believed
to be 77 cents, though it was Intimat
ed that one lot sold for 78, says a
Pendleton paper. There Is much riv
alry between certain buyers which ac
counts for the high figure reached
and the "letting go." Seventy-five
cents, even, is a good price for wheat,
and many farmers argue that to hold
for more than that figure Is a .'spec'?
of gambling. The outlook for a bH;I
higher price, ultimately, la good, but
to hold for en advance is taking a
chance at the gaming table.
Long Horseback Trl.
With two saddle hortes, a park
horse and a fuii assortment of camp
ing supplies, Mr. and. Mrs. Mark
Moorhouse will leave" next Tuesday
for a long journey on horseback.
From Pendleton they will go to We
nnha, from there to Meacham, then to
Folsom mountains, Starkey Prairie,
Beaver creek, Grande , Ronde rlw r,
Lehman Springs, Meadow creek and
to the head of McKay. From that
point they will return home. MK and
Mrs. Moorhouse expect to be gone sev
eral weeks. They will spend the spare
time hunting and fishing. Pendleton
