RuMellvllle, Ky., Aug. 1. The bod
lea of four negroes were found sus
pended from the "old hanging tree
on the Nashville pike, at dawn today.
The men were removed front the Jail
In this city last night by a mob of citl-
sans who forced the jailer to deliver
his prisoners. The lynching was the
result of the murder of James Cun
ningham, a white farmer near Allens
vllle, Ky., a week ago, by Rufus Brow
der, a negro. The man hanged be
longed to a lodge which adopted reso
lutions endornlng the murder.
Browder would have been lynched
at the time of the murder had he not
been quickly spirited, away to Louis
ville. The four men hanged were the
leaders of the party that endorsed the
resolutions. Cunningham was mur
dered because he discharged Browdrr.

Washington, Aug. 1. After a cru
sade which has been carried on for
years, employes -of Uncle1 Sam now
have protection from their employer
against Injuries sustained In the serv
ice of the government. The liability
comes fully effective today hereafter
Uncle Sam's men engaged In hasard
ous Work will be' compensated while
Incapacitated by Injury. '
Under the provisions of this act any
person smpolyed by the United States
as an artisan or laborer In any of Its
manufacturing plants, arsenaU or navy
yards, or In the construction ot river
and harbor fortification work, In the
reclamation of arid lands or the man
agement and control of the same, or
in hazardous employment under the
Isthmian canal commission, shall be
entitled to the same pay that he would
be earning at work, in the event he Is
hurt and has to cease labors. It Is
provided, however, that no compen
satlon shall be paid under this ac
where the Injury la due to the neg
ligence or misconduct of the employe
injured, nor unless said Injury shall
continue for more than 15 days. All
questions of negligence or misconduct
shall be determined by the secretary
of commerce and labor.
It Is further provided In the act, to
assist tne widow or children of any
navy yard employe who shall succumb
to. Injuries received In the service of
the government.

Marshfleld, Ore., Aug. 1. Marsh-
field will be wiped oft the map by a
forest fire If the strong wind now
blowing continues a few hours more.
Many homes, on the outskirts of the
city' are already burned, and the whole
town Is moving.
Firemen and citizens are working
hard building trenches and patrolling
to watch property.
Mayor Ftraw has sent out an appeal
for more help. Flames and smoke.
coupled with the heat, make the work
almost unbearable. It seems as
though the fire had surrounded the
city. The flames seem to be sweeping
In every direction.
Another Town Threatened. -Uklah,
Cal., Aug. 1. A hundred
men were hurriedly dispatched to the
outskirts of the town today to save
the farms In the path of a forest fire.
The elty Is threatened on account of
a change In the wind.
Vtn Near IUg Basin.
Santa Cms. Cal., Aug. 1. Forest
fires are burning sis miles from the
Big Basin. Reinforcements have been
sent In hope of saving the big trees.
The flames are rolling along menacingly.
Minister and Editor Returning Home.
Jack Huston, editor of the Pendle
ton Monday Magnet, who has been
rusticating In the wildernesses of
Wallowa county during the past
month. with the Rev. W. T. Euster,
pastor of the First Methodist church
of Pendleton, will arrive this evening
en route to his home In Pendleton.
