The bird laws In Union county will
open on August 10, and already gun
men are preparing for the big day.
With the announcement comes one
which Is anything but pleasing, and
that Is that many are hunting this sea
son without tha proper license. The
records nt the court house bear out
this statement. It Is not right that
this should be the case. In touching
upon. -this undesirable feature of the
violation of the laws, the Union Re
publican has this to say:
The "Sooner" HportMmaii.
. "If curent reports are true, there
Is need of more active work on the
part of the fish and game warden's of
fice In the Uranua ' T"
bang-bang of shotguns along the
streams and lakes, and In the hills In
.dlcate that the "sooner" sportsman Is
abroad In the land and Is picking off
young ducks and grouse before the
open season has arrived. It Is diffi
cult to apprehend such law-breakers,
but where respect for the law does
not prevent the destruction of young
game out of season, there ought to be
a way of enforcing the law, and It Is
within the province of the game war
den's office to do so. Just at this
time In the year, of all others, the
strict enforcement of the game law Is
Important. The "soner" hunter Is not
the true sportsman." '
Ixx'ol Warden Soon.
In response to the just criticism
made by the Union paper, It Is an
nounced today that by the time the
bird laws are open, a game warden
wilt bo appointed In La Grande. ' Ap
plication has already been made for
the appointment, and his certificate
will bo Issued in ,(liie tl;nn to enforce
the game laws when the season open.
The warden's Identity wll! be kept se
cret as much as possible, that the
violators of the law will not have an
opportunity of dodging him. It Is
safest to procure a hunting license.
It may be costly not to.
