;., THAT COUNTY FAIR.
If wa are going to have a county
fair worth the name, something should
he done to bring It about. Fairs are
not like corps in Grande Ronde val
ley grow without attention. We
have had enough of that kind. If we
are going to have a fair, let us hav
one that will be a credit to our coun
ty. -La Grande Observer.
Right you are, brother. The fairs
of the past few years have been fail
ure In the extreme and a disgrace to
the county. Hut now that tho ques
tion has been brought up let u see If
We can find some of the reasons for
past failures. The Recorder believe
that a very few conditions have com
bined t make ihe events -of the. past
unsatisfactory and also knows that the
rlty of Iji brnnde, the largest In the
Grande Rondo' valley, situated within
a short distance of the fair grounds,
nd the only town In the county that
can possibly get any direct benefit nut
of a county fnlr, has been responsible
to a greater degree for past failures,
than all other oondltlons put together.
The writer of this article Is not firing
at random, but speaks fnim the unde
sirable position of being one of the
- commissioners of ' the society' The
people of Ij Grande, to all appear
ance. are tho last to know that i
county fair la going to be held, or that
there I an organisation In existence,
whose business It Is to help hold thi1
fair from year to year. They show
no Interest whatever In the fair,
when, as a matter of fact. If the bust-
nee men of that town would awnki
to the Importance of the event, mit
their shoulder to the wheel ond help
make It a rousing success, Union coun
ty would reap a great henent and the
City of Iji Grande vvoll tw gstner to
the extent of several ,.1Vtund dol
lars. True. H not ltf ...(le' fair

Last year Elgin srnt a special train
to the county fair and had a fine ex

Elgin find the, outside towns cannot be
