BI'ASMODIC ADVERTISING.
Don t advertise one day and then
quit '
Don't Insert a page In the newspa
per and expect an avalanche of orders.
Keep at It. One dose of medicine
doesn't cure.. Water will, wear away
tone, but It takes times. You can't
can't expect to Bet results the.flrxt
day, nor the second or third. It's only
by continually driving at a thing which
brings result.
Home wasn't built in a day. Nor
la a profitable business built by a
little advertising now and then.
Keep at It.
If I had a rertnln line of goods to
ell, I would take one point and drive
it hard. Next day I would take an
' other and drive that, and so on, 1
would tell all about my goods, but
wouldn't do It all at once. -I wotild
take a point a day say the make of
my goods. I would tell how they are
made and who makes them the ma
terial used and the workmanship.
Next day I would- tell why they are
the best and should be purchased In
preference to others. Then the next
dsy I would give my price, slse, etc.
My ads wouldn't havo to be large,
but Just enough to cause attraction,
o people would mad thrm. Its the
steady advertising that county not
splurging with a full page and then
top. IVopIo soon forget what liny
read and hear, unless brought up to
them continually.
There Is no getting away from the
fart that full pages bring big return
If you keep It up. That's the Iron
ble. tou mustn't stop, or tiny are
soon forgotten. , i

REMOVI.Vfl A MOCNTAIX.
In the digging of the Panama, canal
it has always been considered that,
outside of the construction of the btg
lock and dam works, the chief diffi
culty to be encountered Is the great
cut through the backbone of the
American comUnent at Culcbra. The
problem was there presented of re
moving a mountain and by the aid of
modern steam shovels, drills and dy
namite the solution Is being rapidly
worked out. In fact, according to In
formation which has reached the of
fices of the Isthmian canal commis
sion here, over one-halt oi u,u t,
work has now been completed.
This cut through the hills and
mountains extends a distance of nine
and one-half miles. At the highest
point the original surface of the
ground was 100 feet and a hole from
430 feet to 1000 feet wide and 180
feet deep la being dug there. This
work Involved the excavation of 80,
698,248 cubic yards of earth and
stone. The old French company took
out 12,800,000 cubic yards between
1881 and 188; the new French com
pany took out 10,000,000 cubic yards
form 189S to 1904 and since the Amer
icans have taken charge of the work
they have excavated 18,445,426 cubic
yards. This leaves only 89,652,822
cubic yards yet to be removed, less
than half of the total. In view of the
fact that 11,101.488 yards were taken
out last year after the Americans had
got their machinery In operation and
their organisation perfected, the Indi
cations are that, at the same rate of
progress, the Culebra cut will bo com
pleted In three years and a half.
In the opinion of engineers that
time will fix the date for the comple
tion of the entire canal In other
words they think that the work on the
other sections will be so timid as to
be finished at the moment when the
excavation Is done. If they are cor
rect In this the Panama canal should
be open fur business In Jimuary, 1912.

The busines portion of the city
would naturally present a much
cleaner appearance If waste paper re
