PE.VDLETOM GETS NO CIRCUSES.
Advertising Car Left Baker Today
Headed for Walla Walla, Direct.
while the Barnum & Bailey circus
will show at La Grande, advertising
car No. I left Baker this morning en
No. 1, headed direct for Walla Walla.
The circus will not stop at Pendleton.
No big shows stop there anymore, and
In connection with this fact there Is
a story of municipal greed which was
enacted In that city a few years ago,
when Rlngllng Bros, took their aggre.
gatlon to the county seat of Umatilla
to give a performance.
it seems mat arrangements were
not perfected by the advance agents
tor license and when the show reached
Pendleton ready to stretch Its tents,
the city administration Informed the
manager thaj. no license had been pro
cured, further stating that It would
cost Ringllngs $1000 In cold cash If
they showed In Pendleton that day.
The show people did not want to
make a break In their record of never
falling to put on a performance when
billed to do so and they paid the price.
But after paying Into the city 11000
Rlngllng's manager told the city
fathers of Pendleton that his shows
would never stop there again. Also
that as long as Ringllngs were In the
circus business no big circus would
stop there. Ringllngs are still In the
business. In fact they own the only
two big circuses In the world, and
they rre keeping their word with Pen
dleton. The name of that city remains
on the circus black list and It will
probably require another generation
to place the city In good standing with
circus people. Baker City Ueradl.
