In response to an article which ap-!
peared In Tfca Observer last week,
captioned, "pat Lavey Is Happy,"
comes a letter to The Observer from
O. P. Spauldlng, who figured In the
article mentioned. .', The eplHtle bris
tle with compliments for the -man
who Is exerting every energy to ad
2 vance the fame of the ' city of ' La;
J Grande and the Grande Ronde valley.
The letter follows:
' Portland, Ore., July tT, 1908. j
Editor La Grande Evening Observer,
' La Grande, Oregon. :' ' - 1
Dear Sir: Having Just returned
from ji trip into Washington, I find
a marked copy of your Interesting pa
per on my desk, headed "Pat Lavey Ib
Haooy."' i' ! ,s.-..
Fearing that Patrick bail "swollen
the returns" a little relative to myself,
at the same time knowing how a few
readers would say, "What bouquets
these fellows do throw 'at each other,"
I must nevertheless place the respon
sibility where It belongs.
It Is true Pat came to me a green
little Irishman, direct from his native
land. His honest face and always gen
tlemanly manners appealed to me at
first; when the boys used to have Pat
running after a "half round square"
or a package of muckets, he always
accommodated them ' and ' when he
learned the Joke, joined In their laugh
ter as heartily as though fie Joke
were on some of the 'other boys. He
was a boy of unusual Integrity. Knew
not what fear "meant, and would fight
at the drop of the hat for what he
thought was right, always taking the
part of the weaker boys, or the under
dog.' - ' '''.
Placing honor above everything, lit
tle Pat was sorely tempted. Many
Umea I left him alone with articles. he
not only coveted but rather' Wor
shipped, he never wavered, the most
coveted - prizes were as safe In Fat's
hands as though securely locked In a
vault.' Could a man help but be kind
to a boy likii that? Doesn't Pat de
serve a good friend? -
With a heart as large as his frail
little body, with mischievous young
America around him, he stood almost
alone. The making; of another gallant
Phil Sheridan and from Just such stuff
came my little Pat I contend that
such traits of character never die In a
boy but grow and expand. He would
break his neck before his word. La
Grande may Indeed feel proud of him,
and what he says of La Grande and
Its people I would vouch for. Pat
cannot tell an untruth. He will have
us all "boosting" for what we have
heard as '"that beautiful Grande Ronde
Ask anyone 5 country" and .the lively, pretty little
fitted. " 5 ' . . . .
