CELtBRATED
' Yesterday, wherever there Is a, Mor
mon settlement or community, there
was also some sort of a picnic or cele
bration. The members of the church
residing In the vicinity of La Grande
met early In the morning In the Car
bine grove, near tho Jroebstel bridgu,
and spent the day In honor of the first
arrival of the Mormons In Utah, July
H, 1847. F. S. Bramwell was the
principal speaker of the day,'1 There
were present two persons who were
with the first wagon train that pulled
Into the Bait Lake valley; .Mrs. Mary
Black and W. V. O. Carbine. Both
made short addresses. Races of all
kinds were Indulged In by big, little,
oiu aim . jrw'us). ""JIZ ' iZzZ't
was won by Mr. Glenn. The ladles'
race was won by Mrs, Cunllff. . At
noon every one helped himself to the
delicacies and substantiate of a great
basket dinner, which was a basket din
ner only because it waa supposed to
be carried to the plcnlo grounds In bas
kets. In the evening all who were so
Inclined, participated tn the dance
held at the old meeting bouse by the
tabernacle.
1 At Imbler. .
Out at Imbler the crowd was larger
than here, there being five or six hun
dred people in attendance. The pro
gram of the day waa much the same;
perhaps more elaborate. The big din
ner waa served In the same way, and
the evening dance held in the Bon
Ton hall at Imbler, attracted a great
number. In addition to all kinds of
foot races, suited to all 1 classes and
conditions of avoirdupois, the Imbler
picnickers witnessed somo exciting
horse races and held a pulling contest,
In which It men, hanging onto the
end of a 50-foot rope, were dragged
along by one horse, belonging to Don
Blanchard. There were also gome
automobile races, and the ball game
In the afternoon between the "Bach
elors" and the "Benedicts." was won
by the young unmarried fellows, 2-8.
Two games of ball were played by
the picnic crowd. The local ground
had been secured from Mr. Lincoln,
and everybody who cared to go was
taken to the games from the grove.
First, two teams of young men played,
the regular L. D. S. organization win
ning from the scrubs by a score of 8
to 1. The real contest was between
the married men and the unmarried,
Immediately after the first game.
Waldo Geddes, who had already pitch
ed nine Innings, now had to pitch 10
more. ' The contest became Intensely
Interesting, but finally the' boys won.
Real baseball was played In this game,
for 10 Innings were necessary to de
cide It. The score waa -5, Mr. Fer
rin pitched for the married men, and

Pear Blight Can B Stopped. .
Mr. Huffman, the orchardlst. says
that he believes the pear blight which
so seriously threatened our orchards
a few weeks ago, Is being kept out of
tho commercial orchards almost en
tirely, and that If the people who live
In town, or who have but a 'small or
chard, will be as particular a the
owners of large, orchards, next spring
there will be no blight. Down in the
Rogue River valley, which Is the "ban
ner pear country of Oregon, they
have destroyed the blight' by careful
spraying before the sap rises In the
spring and by ruthless cutting off of
the affected parts. . After the rising
of the sap the only possible preventive
of blight Is to cut the branch affected
off several Inches below the diseased
part. The branch cut off "must be
burned."- If left lying oh the
ground, the bacteria causing th blight
will spread. through the air, and the
mischief goes on. feiven u not leu m
proximity to the orchard, birds will
carry the disease. The only way Is to
burn. . , , ' :
The Marvel of the Biscuit.
Over at Waitsburg this week a test
of rapid harvesting was made by the
Preston-Parton Milling company, and
It required just 22 minutes to cut,
