Teason-of location, railway facilities,
and labor supply, be located at . La
Grande. There re a thousand good
and sufficient reasons why such ; a
plant should be started at once tn
fact, It should be In operation at the
present time.
t To take care of the fruit suitable

agree with me that If we had a sure

than now. The temptation to pack In
ferior grades with the better grades
of fruit for the purpose ot getting rid
of them would be eliminated and the
reputation of Grande Ronde valley
fruit raised considerably. When' ' a
cannery Is' accessible to the fruit
grower, only the best grades need to
be packed and shipped, and fhua the
market is relieved of the competition
of the off-grade stuff, thus assuring a
much better price for the best. It Is
the competition of the low grades that
lowers the market value of the better
fruit "
The large quantities of fruits now
going to waste would be taken care of.
and the frultgorwer of the valley would
save 'thousands of dollars. This loss,
while affecting most the grower, at
the same time affects the whole val
ley. The above also applies to the
early and undesirable varieties, which,
having a limited market very often
remain unpicked.
A combine, cannery and packing
plant means the utilization of the raw
materials of the Community at home.
It means more money coming Into the
town, and more money distributed
among the people of the whole valley.
Many a woman and child would be
enabled to earn a considerable sum of
money during the season of packing
and canning, and this money is always
expended for the needs of the earner.
There are many more reasons why a
combined cannery and packing plant
should bo established at La Grande,
and I do not hesitate to say that I
could absolutely guarantee to get con
tracts from jobbing houses for the en
tire output of such a plant. . '
But the plant should be owned by
the people of the valley, Every busi
ness man In the valley, every fruit
grower In the valley, and every citi
zen who has the welfare ot this valley
at heart should own a share In such
a plant First, because such a plant
would pay from the start and the pro
moters of It could with safety guar
antee six per cent on every share of
stock held In such a plant, the very
first year of Its operation,
i Now then, why can't we have such a
plant located here at once?
I am signing this personally, and 1
firmly believe that the entire valley
will respond; and that the fruitgrow
ers will welcome such an Institution
because the acreage In fruit Is In
creasing rapidly and the loss . ch sea
son from wsste Is increasing.
Let us start this off at ohce. Let
us create a market for the produce of
our home orchards, and at the same
time a place of employment for our
young men and women.
COME ON! LETS GET STARTED
NOWI
Respectfully,
P. C. LAVEY,
