ANTI-TOXIN FOR ASTHMA. '
Eugene Fliyhtcian'e Coarse Defended
' by Medical Fraternity.
At Engene last month Dr. George
0"B. DeBar adminlHtered diphtheric
anti-toxin to a young man ' named
Vlckera. for asthma, and the. patient
died almost Immediately after its ad
ministration. An Inquest was held and
the coroner's Jury brought In a ver
dict to the effect that the doctor had
be-en guilty ot criminal carelessness.
Immediately after the rendering of
this verdict. IS physicians of Eugene
signed a letter. In which they stated
that in their Judgment Dr. DeBar de
served no cenHure for the unfortunate
result In the Vlckera ease, as In their
opllnon he had used an authorized
remedy In a manner sanctioned by a
wide-spread professional experience.
They also stated that "at the lact
meeting of the Oregon State Medical
society, at Seaside, a prominent phy
sician of Or gob read a paper on the
treatment of asthma by anti-toxin,
wherein he cited (00 cases that he had
treated without a fatality and with
almost uniformly good results. In the
discussion that followed a Anwn nr
more cases were reported by promi
nent physicians of the state, with the
same results and without a single fa
tality. Since that time many physi
cians all over the state have been
using anti-toxin In the treatment of
asthma, and usually with good results.
The statement made by these phy
sicians Is clear" and concise, and It I
very gratifying to see that they have
In this manner endeavored to set a
fellow practitioner right before the
public. They were certainly disinter
ested In the case except In so far" as
they desired tat there should be
some authoritative reply to the state
ments of Jurymen who were entirely
Ignorant of the matter upon which
they sought to pass Judgment. Med
ical Sentinel.

How Dry Conditions Affect Municipal
Fathers Over the Mountain.
Beer, in Its application to the gen
enil weight of the city council, was
discussed last nlpht as a preliminary
to the regular meeting of the munici
pal body.
"Since prohibition went Into ef
fect," declared on councilman with
an oratorical wave toward his belt.
"I have taken on seven pounds. Pro
hibition Is a gr-n-at thing."
"In that same time," replied an
other councilman, without enthusi
asm, "I have lost exactly seven pounds.
I Son't know that the beer I drank
was responsible for the weight, but
the free lunch I gut along with it cer
tainly helped some." Pendleton
