IS THE OREGOJHAN WROXG?
The Portland Oregonlan says that
no good town la dry and that no dry
town la a good town. This Is high
sounding fallacy. It Is a pretty play
on words, but It dues not bear inves
tigation. Recently the entire state of North
Carolina went dry and every big town
In the state except Wllmlrgtun and
Durham, two of he 10 big cl :es In
the state, voted dry within their own
precincts. Wilmington bos a popula
tion of 20,0(10 and Durham of about
15.000.
Every other big town In tho state,
Including Charlotte, 20,000 popula
tion; Ashertlle, 18,000; Greenboro,
1S.000; s.lelgh, 16.000; Newhern, 13.
000. voted dry and 78 out of the 8
counties In the state were carried
completely, town and all. by the pro
hibitionists. Are none of these North Carolina
towns good towns? Are all these peo
ple deluded In voting towns of from
lt.OOO to 20,000 population dry?
As towns go In the south, North
Carolina has some excellent represen
tatives of southern towns. They are
not only bustling manufacturing and
lumbering cities, but they are home
nd school centers of the first class.
, And the statistical reports show that
they are alt growing. They have adopt
ed prohibition from an economfi
standpoint and they will make a sue

TRAGEDIES Or THE HILL.
Another pathetic tragedy of the
frontier is reported from Lewlston, In
the death of a recluse rancher at the
age of 0 years, in the loneliness of his
secluded cabin.
Scattered here and there through
the mountains and forests, these her
mit characters, flotsam . of pioneer
conditions, are found all over this
western land. We find them in the
hills around every lake, and by many
a mountnln meadow, living their Quiet
and uneventful lives apart from fam
ily and kindred.
When the winter snows lie deep
around their little cabins, and the long
night falls on the desolate wilderness,
what thoughts, what memories, must
haunt these lonely men, sitting there
in solitude and darkness.
As the years go by they grow more
timid and shrinking, more abashed
and confused In their occasional con
tact Kith civilization and society.
Thus their lonely lives wear away
until some morning the accustomed
our) of smoke Is lacking . above the
cabin roof, and the faithful dog stands
guard as only mourner over the place
of death. Spokesman-Review.

Displeased With Oration Planned fo
x Uncle Sam's Fleet.
London, July. 17. Reports received
here regarding the magnificent prep
arations that are being made In Aus
tralian and New Zealand porta for the
entertainment of the American fleet
are provoking a great deal of com
ment The expenditure of such ' vast
sums by the colonial cities In enter
taining the fleet of a foreign power is
condemned by the London papers. An
undercurrent of jealousy of the t'nlted
States runs through many of these
editorial articles, and the cruise of
the Yankee vessels Is severely criti
cised by some naval authorities.
On the continent, however, and es
pecially in Germany the political as
pects of the cruise are considered In
a more favorable light.
The Marine Rundschau, which Is
the subsidized organ of the German
Imperial murine department, consid
ers that the "concentration of the
American fleet In the Pacific" marks
the beginning of the now epoch In
the worliVs history which was fore
shadowed by Count Vorck von War
tenburg. Count Waldersee's chief of
staff In 1S00, when he expressed the
opinion that the trend of events tay In
the direction of a union on the part
of the Continental and Atlnntlc pow
ers against the "Pacific hemisphere."
It Is added that "America's political
wishes will only' be recognised if they
are backed by the guns of her fleet,
but the scope of her desires will be
bounded by the navy's ratlins of ac
tion." The conservative Kreu Zeltung In
dorses these observations with the re
mark that the American navy must
not only be ready to strike, but "ready
to strike where strategy dumands."
General von Zeuclln then proceeds to
i consider the lines of communication
and the harbor accommodation on the
west const of Ann i lea and In the Pa-
clflr, which he pronounces to be In-

How Nature Provides.
Our Beauty, Health and Ifcpplness.
Is it not possible, end a'tojroaher prob
able that elements iiecej&;;ry for the
body-health are contained in the med
icinal roots found in the earth, digested
in the plant laboratory of Suture and
made ready for man or animal ?
There ia a growing belief among scien
tists that the vegetable kingdom fur
ntEhes cs with the necessary elements
for blood making iind to keen that deli
cate balance of health that the human
aninml is so apt to disturb by wrong
methods of living. Thus we know that
we should get the phosphates from the
wheat in our bread or some cereal
foods, and iron from certain vegetables,
ueu Me tteiM.ii l...jp
If there ia ill-health then oar best
method for recovering oar standard
balance of health is to go to Katnre's
Laboratory the plant life which will
furnish the remedy.
Buried deep in oar forests is the plant
known si Golden Seal (Hvdrastis) the
root of which Edwin M. hale, M. D.,
Professor of Materia Medics at Hahne
mann Medical College, Chicago, states
"In relation to its general effects on the
system, there is no medicine in nse
about which there is racb general un
animity of opinion. It is universally
regarded as the tonic useful in all de
bilitated states." Dr. Hale continues:
"Prof. John M. Bcndder says, ' It stim
olates the digestive processes, and in
creases the assimilation of food. By
these means the blood is enriched, and
this blood feeds the mopculnr rvstem.'
1 mention the muscular system because
I believe it first feels the increased
power imparted by the stimulation of
increased nutrition. The consequent
improvement on the nervous and
glandular systems are natural results.'"
Stillingia or Queen's root is another
root wluch has lonii been in repute as
an alterative ( blood pnritier) and Prof.
John King, M. D., says of it: "An
alterative unsurpassed by few if any
other of the known alteratives; moat
successful in skin end fcrr.mlons affec
tions. Bene-:icial in bronchial affections
permanently cures bronchitis relieves
irritation an important coujih remedy
coughs of years1 standing being cured.
Aids in blood-making and nutrition,
and may be taken without harm foi
lon periods."
Nearly forty years ago. I. R. V.
Pierce of Buffalo, X. ., combined ar
extract of the two above roots, trpethei
with that of 8tne root, Black ('herrv
bark, Bloodroot, Mandrake and Give
erinw into a prescription which lie mil
np in a readv-to-use form, nnd called
Dr. Tierce's Golden Medical recovery.
It was most sitcceFftil in correcting
and caring such ailments as were due
to steimach and liver derangements,
iollowed by impure blood.
t In cases of weak stomach, indiges
tion, dyspepsia, ulceration of stomach
or bowels, torpid liver, or biliousness,
the "Golden Medical Discovery" be
never been excelled as a tonic and in
vigorator which pnts the afiected or
gans "in tune" and enables them to
perform their proper funclions.
This alterative and tonic is indicnted
when you have symptoms of headache
backache, in fact "ache all over."
When yonr appetite is gone, tongue
furred, bad triMe in month, foul breath,
when you feel weak, tired, blue and
discouraged, then is the time to take
this tiatjral u-sterative of Dr. Pierce.
