Walla Walla, July !. The Union
says:
Edward Hall, aged 80, who claims
he will come Into possession of a mil
lion dollar estate September 1, Is
lodged In the county Jail awaiting a
probable charge of kidnaping and pos
sibly a more serious one. Mary Fer
klns, aged 14. years, Is occupying an
adjacent cell.
Hall halls from the Milton country.
where he has lived for several years
In practical obscurity until several
weeks ago when he started the story
that he was soon to become rich. He
recently fell violently In love with the
Ferklns girl, his case, seeming to
please both her and lier parents. He
has been staying with the girl's fam
11 yin Milton for several weeks and
claims he had the consent of her
father to marry her when she was 18
years old. At first this satisfied him,
but later he decided four years was
too long to postpone the wedding and
accordingly he sot the girl's consent
tw. on. manner the father
became aware of the Intentions- of the
pair and Immediately prevented their
getaway. This so enraged Hall that
he threatened to commit suicide by
cutting his throat with a razor. He
was apprehended In the very act of
severing his jugular vein and persuad
ed to abandon his purpose. He, how
ever, left the home of his would-be
father-in-law amid the tears of his
sweetheart. - . ' .
From all that could be learned of
the case yesterday It seems that the
Ferklns girl was on her way to work
for a family named Wilder, near
Presoott. It Is supposed Hall followed
and persuaded hatr from going to her
destination. The two registered at
hotol In Prescott whero they remained
until Monday. Monday morning they
started up the railroad track toward
Alto entirely destitute of money and
carrying a small hand grip.
