Chester Hansen, who formerly
lived here, was down with .the White
Swan band from Baker City yester
day. He is at present running an au
tomobile livery there. Another popu
lar member of the' band who came
over yesterday was Chct Wilbur, lino
type operator on the Herald.
Several parties were out fishing
yesterday, but no large catches have
been reported. Dr. Molltor and Mrs.
Molltor, Mrs. Noill and daughter. May,
Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Cherry, were up
the river about 15 miles in Dr. Moll
tor's auto, and enjoyed a fine picnic
dinner, but caught no trout. ,
Mrs. D. H. Stewart leaves In the
morning for a three month's visit
with her father in Nevada. On the
way she will visit her brother in
Boise a few days. Mr. Stewart Is ar
ranging to Bpend a few weeks In the
coast cities before the theatrical sea
son opens.

made a trip to. Union today.
Miss Minerva Kelly, stenographer at
the land office, Is recovering from her
recent Illness, caused by an attack of
the mumps and was able to pay a visit
to the office today. ,

Eastern Oregon Veterans' association,
Is In the city today on business con
nected with the G. A. R. He will re
turn to Union tonight.
W'. D. Arnold, who was - formerly
our county commissioner, but now a
resident of Portland, Is in the city "on
a short buslneis mission. He is meet
ing many of his old-time friends, and.
while in a measure keeping in touch
with our progress, was surprised to
note the growth La Grande had made
during his absence. ;
Four younm men of Salt Lake pass
ed through La Grande last night en
route to New Zealand as missionaries
for the church of the Latter Day
Saints. . The young men were person
al friends of Express Agent George
Htbbard of this city and enjoyed a
few minutes' visit with their former
chum.
Mrs. Mary Kalmbach of this city,
was married last week In Spokane to
B. E. Birch, a mining man of that city.
Mrs. Kalmbach Is well known In La
Grande, having lived here until re
cently. The wedding was a quiet af
fair. . After a tour of the sound cities
and Canada, Mr. and Mrs. Birch will
make their home In Spokane. The
bride has a host of friends In La
Grande.

A loud explosion shortly after noon
today created considerable specula
tlon In the residence portion of the
city. The cause of the noise was the
Ignition of gas accumulated in an
empty "barrel, some time ago contain
ing wood alcohol. The loud explosion
was louder than serious. Frank Floyd
of the Newlln drug store, had lighted
a match in too close proximity to the
barrel, which lay In the back yard,
and Instantly he was In the midst of
an accident the result of which Is
causing him some pain. His hand
was badly burned, but he is able to
be at his work this afternoon. Other
wise there was no harm done.
