BOOSTERS FLAY COVE AGAIN.
Hie Pk-nJc at Cove Yesterday Was
Succexa.
The Woodmen picnic at Cove was
a success. There was not very much
of a crowd present, but those who
were there enjoyed themselves thor
oughly. Nearly all the visitors were
from La Grande and Union.
There was no formal program, but
what with the basket dinners, the ball
game and the balloon ascension. The
visitors, and especially the "Boosters,1
were treuted very nicely. . The ball
game, which was all one-sided In fa
vor of Cove, resulted in a score of
15 to 3, the Boosters getting their
runs in the ninth. The two teams are
planning another game for the near
future in order to decide who the
victors really are, both teams having
won one game.

A Poor Excuse.
.The Union water system In so far
as It applies to fire protection, is a
poor excuse, and It la to the credit
of the present council that they are
making an effort to remedy the de
fects. If there has been a fire in the
past five years where the pressure
was what it should have been, we
cannot recall it, and It is high time

to pay It and we cannot afford to ask

The same thing Is true of our first

Barley Burn..'
A live coal from a threshing en
gine on the Harry Collins farm one
mile east of Valley Grove station, yes
terday afternoon set fire to a field of
barley belonging to Sir. Collins, and
before the blaze could be extinguished
40 acres of barley out of a, 120-acr
field were entirely consumed, destroy
ing more than 3000 bushels. The
yield on this place was heavy, ' the
barley, averaging about SO bushels an
acre. A flie-flghting company of
about 70 men was quickly organized
when the alarm was given but It was
more than an hour before any head
way was gained against the flames.
The separator and other parts of the
threshing machine were not damaged.
