Woodmen lodge building at 8 o'clock,
taking at least 30. Others will go by
train.
The lodge men look for a great
time at the county picnic. Aside from
enjoying a picnic dinner, there will be
two ball games and a balloon ascen
sion to afford entertainment. The

Country About Walla Walla Now the
Scon of Harvesting In Full Blast.
Walla Walla, July 8. Harvest of
grain In Walla Walla county for the
season of 1908 is now on, and In al
most every direction from Walla Wal
la the golden grain Is being cut and
threshed today. Commencing Monday
of this week the first active work for
the harvest wag begun. In a few lo
calities the machines were- started
Monday, and in the last two days the
harvest has become practically gener
al in every locality with the exception
of Eureka Flat.
Preparations are being made for
harvest on Eureka Flat, and by the
last of this week or the first of next
cutting will begin. From reports re
ceived from different sections, the
wheat 1; of good quality, and will rank
among the very best grades. The yield
Is also good, and while It Is not
thought the record of last year will
be reached, the crop of this year will
rank with the average.
Harvesting today Is In full sway
near Spofford station, and also near
Whitman station. Fred Stlno Is har
vesting a large crop of barley near
Spofford, nnd a number of ranchers In
thn locality of Whitman station have
machines In tho field today. On tho
Ueser, Collins and Ylend ranches,
near Valley Grove, tho harvest com
menced today.
The weather of the past few days Is
excellent for harvest, nnd Iridlcntlon
are that the present weather will con
tinue for Firac time. While the wn

Nels Raunn, a farmer residing near
Eugene, brought to town today a drove
of hogs for shipment to Portland.. The
long drive in the hot sun told on them
and when they reached the stock
yards on the depot grounds they were
in a bad condition as a result ot the
heat Several of them died during the
afternoon before they were loaded on
the car, and a number of others were
expected to die. Eugene Register.
