I went to work for the Commercial
rlub there, the town known as

the city (and there was not half so

for $10 each for the purpose of light
ing the four blocks of business

funds. ' Within three days the lights
were up, and th first night th streets
were crowded with women and chil
dren and all seemed happy and cheer
ful. They were not afraid because
the streets were one blaze pf light.
After these lights were up a week, I
called for a vote of the peoplehrough
the local papers on the question of

our hotels. . We must admit that he
would be most favorably impressed
with our progressive spirit if he

arrives In this city on one of the night
trains. Don't you think he would be
most favorably impressed with our

this applies to cities as well as Indi
viduals. The merchants and business men
alone should not be made to bear the
burden, but, as well lighted streets are
enjoyed "by all our citizens, our wives,
sisters and sweethearts, all should help
In maintaining the lights and having
as many of them as possible. Then
we will have crowded streets every

run their machines along Adams
avenue and Depot street through the
business section of the city, owners of
carriages could do the same. It would
be pleasant going under so many
lights, besides, strangers could pro'n
enade with comfort along our streets
and the mere sight of their happy
faces would repay us will for the

helped to mnke this Improvement In
several towns, and I never regretted
what I contributed, because I got at
it:

preciate the efforts of Mr. Collier In
this lighting proposition. The time
will come after the work has been
done when the women of La Urunde
will bless them for it.
