The Pendleton Tribune has the fol
lowing to say ti)t near beer's sale in
that city:
Near beer, which Is a toothless rela
tive to rtal beer, has been making Its
appearance before the dry palates of
Pendleton citizens durlrig the paat
few days. It has responded to a num
ber of encores. The article- looks like
the real stuff, wears the same ruff
about Its neck, and carries the same
air of opulence and optimism. The
man who reaches across the bar for
It the first time invariably looks over
his shoulder to see If any prohibition
people are watching him.
The only accessory of the forbidden
beverage that doe not accompany Its
successor are vain regrets.
Much of the n'ar beer at present
comes form Walla Walla. The brew-i
ra oi tnat city were unkind enough
to ship it In regular booze barrels
which arrived In town like an ad
vance guard of a supreme court de
cision against prohibition. These bar
rel were hauled upon heavy brewery
wagons from the depots and were
flaunted through the streets until
they worked up sentiments of curios
ity and thirst that could not be re
staled. They arrived at their destln
atlons simultaneously with a crowd
of eager citizens.
Opinions differed as to the amounu
of genuine satisfaction a glass of the
near beer disburses.
One of the elect of the bar rooms
who profcssed to know, en1 backed
his profession by the confession that
he guessed he would take another,
rendered the following minority re
port:
"Maybe you folks think you are
doing something In the new and orig
inal line by getting a geometrical an
gle between your glasses and the bar.
But there were other Perrys ahead of
you. I have been smacking my llpn
as a sequel to this near b?er for over
a year now. I ran across It first In
Boston. They called ' It 'proximity
punoh' there and had founded another
cult on the strength of lt ' r
"Since then I have been going up
against It at various parts of the
United States. It la the unwrung end
of local option.
"How do I like It? Well. It's like
prohibition Itself. You have got to
get usod to It. It ain't a friend you
can acquire by slapping it on the back
the flrBt time. You've got to side up
to It several times ami let familiarity
have plenty of time to got spontane
ous and reciprocal.
"But It has Its advantages. Its
whiff keeps the wolf away from the
door of many n bnrtemler's home. The
main defect with the machine the In
ventor of prohibition turned out l
that It doesn't work the bartender Into
the tout ensemble. Its that Individual
for the mercies of the antl-sulcldc
bureaus. Near beer has-been append
ed as tin apology for this disregard.
There Is a Miff demand for It unl the
customers who drink It are going to
quaff It In the orthodox it; le with
their feet on thi; tailing and their el
bows WHKKitvj for Joy against the top
of the bar. They are going to th su
looiis for It. Tin y r g.dng to put
In their orders to a man who has had
a lot of vocal training In the art of
saying 'What'll ye have?'
"I notice that si vcral of the saloons
have opened t'leir dinrs ngjin in Pen
dleton? Near beer Is the Itituicant
that keeps thV hinges from petting
rusty. It nlso prevents the saloon bus
iness from vegetating Ir.to Innocuous
desuetude. And If I were giving an
expert opinion on the taste of mar
beer and had grown us'.hma'lc on con
versation, 1 guess rt,abo Innocuous
desuetude would strike it about as
close as anything."
Stimulation Without lrrltntlon.
In case of stomach and liver trou
ble the proper treatment Is to stimu
late these organs without Irritating
them. Orlno Laxative Fruit Pyrup
aids digestion and stimulate the liver
and bowels without Irritating these
organs like pills or ordinary cathar
tics. It does not 'nauseate or gripe
and Is mild and plrasant to take. A.
