On the eve of harvest, so to speak,
the real status of the crop conditions
In Oregon and Washington proves to
be satisfactory. The following from
the Walla Walla Union:
Seldom, If ever before, at this time
of year, has thero been such a general
optimistic feeling prevailing among
the farmers who depend upon their
wheat crops for their dally bread, and
every day canJbe. heard the remarks
of some energetic son of toll who says
he Is going to harvest tha biggest crop

this year that he has ever received.
From all parts of the county come re
ports that grain Is In the best of con
dition, standing several Jnches higher
than usual and as luxuriant as one
could wish. The heads are Just, be
ginning to fill properly, and within 10
or 1G days, farmers say the kernels
will be completely developed.
While there has been considerable
uneasiness because of the lack of
rain during tho past two Nor three
weeks, farmers win not admit that any
damage has been done, and positively
say they will break last year's record
of 5,000,000 bushels, for Walla Walla
county. Spring grain Is In good con
dition, notwithstanding the continued
dry. spell, and thus far little or no
damage has resulted. Fall sown grain
never looked belter, and excellent
yields from all parts of the county are
expected. I

RAX OVEK A BOY.
Serious Acrldrnt at Baker Ignored by
Automobile Driver.
Murren was run over by an automo'
bile and badly bruised about the body.
The accident occurred about 7 o'clock
In the evening on Fourth street. The
man who drove the machlnels alleged
to be Dr. Low of Union. The citizens
of Baker are very Indignant over this
accident for It waa the most cold
blooded piece of work ever carried on
In this city. After the man had de
liberately run over the little fellow
he did not even' stop to see If he was
hurt. Several people saw the acci
dent and although the man was not
caught, his license number was ob
tained. The number on the license
Is said to be 638. From last reports
the Injured boy was doing nicely un
der the circumstances. The matter
of arresting the alleged criminal was
taken up before Judge Alf Currey,
who refused to Issue a warrant for
his arrest on the present proof. The
child's parents will take the matter up
with the prosecuting attorney and the
guilty party will probably be brought
to Justice. Baker City Herald.
