7:45 last evening the planing mill of
the Union Pine Lumber company was
found to be burning, and despite the
efforts of every one who could In any
way be of assistance, the planer, box
factory, one carload of first-class
lumber standing on the sidetrack
ready for shipment were Entirely de
stroyed. - The loss is . about 19,000,
with 13000 Insurance, The property
belonged to Jcn L. Jacobs, who has

cobs was able to save his books and
accounts. No one was hurt.
No Water Near.
The establishment . was located In
such a position that the city fire de
partment could not reach it with a
stream. The department turned out,
but aside from preventing a spread
of the fire, their efforts were, useless.
The fire Is a hard blow to the owners.
The company has not announced at
this time whether or not It will re
build.

Pemlloton Bankrupt Saloon Stock to
Be Sold by Referee.
That peculiar bankruptcy case at
Pendleton, where a saloon stock w
ordered sold In a dry county, that was
ground for comment In all papers of
the state, and much wonderment by
those who were aware of the peculiar
conditions, has at last been ferreted
out.
Though the prohibition law Is In
effect Its provisions do not prevent
the sale at auction of a bankrupt stock
it liquors for the reason that the na
tional bankruptcy law provides for the
public sale of bankrupt stocks.
