Day at Elgin.
Elgin, July 0. (Special.) Not
withstanding that there .were clone to
5000 people In Elgin last Saturday to
attend the best Fourth of July cele
bration In the history of the city, and
that there was a varied lot of attrac
lions, the chief Interest centered In
the ball game between Cove and fcigin
for a side bet of 1100. The game was
pulled off In the morning to allow the
Elgin team to play Its double-header.
closing the baseball attractions of the
day with Union during the afternoon,
Interest had run high In the Cove-
Elgin game, and It Is no wonder that
thousands saw the game. The side
bet was but a trifle compared to the
sum total of - small amounts which
changed hands on the outcome of the
contest. ' Elgin won, 6 to S. ,
In the afternoon ' the Elgin team
again- covered Itself with victory by
defeating the Union team, 14 to 12.
Hoh. 'Walter M. Pierce was the ora
tor of the day here. .
Quiet at Union.
Union, July 6. (Special.) Inhab
itants of Union Saturday divided It
self between La Grande, Elglnt, and
.Baker City. Those coming back
from any of these places speak highly
of the elaborateness of the celebra
tions, but those who saw the monster
parade at La Grande are profuse In
their praise. t
Union was pratlcally deserted, but
those who did remain here for the
day, found some entertainment In !i
came of baseball between two sets of
business men.

In Spite of Accident Last Evening
Hieka Will Try Again Tonight.
Prot Hicks, who was hurt yestei

ly rising. It sped swiftly with the wind
and Mr. Hicks struck the shed with
force enough to kilt most men. In
deed. It was thought for a time that
he was badly hurt. He will try again
tonight, in order to show the people
that he Is no fake. Ho will start to fill
the balloon at half past six.
