HEWS LETTER
. Portland, -June J9. -(Special cor
respondence.) There Is as Intense
competition between . the different
communities of Oregon in Issuing at
tractive and convincing literature.
Many of the- publications circulated to
draw attention to this state today are
superior to the most ambitious pro
duct of the metropolitan printers 10
years ago. f p to the present time the
most artistic booklet printed In the
state Is one Just gotten out by the
Yamhill County Development league.
Its reproductions of raspberries, cher
ries, prunes and grapes .' are ' dona in
natural colors, and like the picture In
the old fable, would almost deceive
the birds. ' - .v
Secretary W. L. Crtssey of the Ore
gon State Dairy association, has ready
tor circulation thai repsrt of that body
for the past year, j It Is very much the
most comprehensive report which has
appeared concerning any dairy meet
Ing on the Pacific coast, and Mr.(Crls-
sey will furnish copy to anyone Inter
ested, upon request Oregon hai
grown wonderfully In' frult,-tigilcuV
ture and general Industries, but dairy
Ing holds the record for greatest In
crease, dairy products having risen
from a values of 15,000,000 annually
five years ago to MT.000,000 In 1907. -'The
Dalles business men have In
vlted the buslnes men of Portland to
attend their "Cherry carnival" Wed
nesday, July 1, and many people will
make the trip from this city, cither by
boat or rati.
An Intensely Interesting ' meeting
vital to the future of Portland, Ore.
and the northwest.. Is pnlioii f..r in
morrow at the convention hall of the
Portland commercial club. Transnor
tatlon questions of deepest moment to
tnis section will be discussed.
Portland's excursion to Eugene was
one of the most successful and , de
lightful events that ever took place In
this state. The Portlandera had a
choir along, which sang: .
"A Lane county drink
Wo are willing to buy.
What do they drink
In a county that's dryT"
Innumerably equally effective
verses enlivened the Journey.
When the National Association of
Retail Grocers of the United States
meets In Portland next year, special
trains from various parta of the coun
try will be feature. One Is already
planned by the merchants If Cincin
nati, another from Chicago, while Bos
ton has organized "Portland club"
and they will charter their own car.
LAUD RUSH
V.'hlle It Is pos.alble thiit there will
!) a land office rush ml tn lint- in iiw...

It is not likely that the filing on Blue
Mountuln ninl.iiml for st luiulx In th-
I.a Grande Culled 1'tiitiS land office
next Wertnrsdiy will be the cause of
a very noticeable rush. Thrre arc
large arena of this land to be thrown
open on next Wednesday morning at
I o'clock, as the past month has been
set aside for settlement on these
tracts of land. The land Is located In
the Blue Mountain national forest, not
far from La Grande.
It la believed that there are al
ready some here to gain early admit
tance to the office when the doors
are thrown open on that date, but as
yet nothing has leaked out that there
will be anything to resemble the rush
of last summer.
