Not alone have many passenger
trains of the, preat , Northern roa3
been sent out over the O. R. & N.
through La Grande during the past
few weeks on account of the floods In
Montana, but much freight har also
come through ' here. Last evening a
train of 24 cars, loaded with hogs for
eastern markets, passed through here
and today another banana train war
taken over this road. All these spe
cial trains have made ail abundance ol
traffic which has necessitated the use
of all avallabl employes In the dlvis
Ion point here. Regardless of the
fact that aside from the rush in busi
ness In the 6. R. & N. freight depart
ment, there have been not many tralnt
from the other transcontinental roads,
the traffic has been kept moving In
a very satisfactory manner.' This wai
made possible by the splendid power
equipment of the local round house.
On the 29th of this month H. J.
Hockenberry opens a. summer school
In this city, which will last for a period
of six weeks. By reason of new laws
passed by the last state legislature,
thero will be more teachers In attend
ance at this summer school than ever
before, and Mr. Hockenberry looks for
about 25 to register as students. The
fact that all third grade certificates
must cover physical geography and
the two classes of literature, will re
quire additional attendance this sum
mer. However, all grades will be
taught, and at the end of the term,
examinations will be given for all
grades.
