A noise, presumably of blasltng hasi
been disturbing the . citizens of La
Grande for several days, and an In-'
vestlgatlon revealed the fact that W11-'
Ham Miller, was blasting out holes'
for some Immense stone pillars at the
entrance to his property In South La
Grande. ; : . . .; -
Mr. Miller Is planning to erect a
home that will do Justice to the Ideal
location and if carried out will prove
one of the most beautiful homes In
eastern Oregon.
La Grande can already boast of
some splendid dwellings, but the ctty
as a' whole delights In seeing still more
of this good work going on. Mr. Mil
ler is not the only man who contem
plates building this summer, and one
year from now the . city will have
within its borders some new homes
that would be a pride to a larger city
than this. ,
Money for Library.
The plans for the new Carnegie li
brary building have been forwarded to
Mr. Carnegie and have been approved
and Mr. Hyde has received from R. A.
Franks, president of the Home Trust
company, a letter from which we take
the following paragraphs:
"The plans seem be very '.:
factory, provided the bi'lldlng can be
completed, ready for occupancy for
the amount promised. ..
"When I have advices that the site
has been purchased and paid for and
you are ready to begin the construc
tion of the building. I shall arrange
for payments on account of Mr. Car
negie's grant"'
The architects, Wayland & Fennel,
of Boise, have been advised of the ap
proval of the plans and have been
asked to come to Baker at once and
prepare for the letting of the contract
This is certainly good news for the
people of this city, and we may now
expect the work on the new building
under way before the summer Is over.
