" T1IK NEXT iilO REFORM. ,
The next few years will see magnifi
cent rtfor"m work done In the United
,Eta(. The country Is adopting pn
iilbltlon everywhere, ftmply because
the 11-iuor traffic Is an economic waste.
Taxpayers have come to the conclu
sion thftt the Income from the busi
ness does not offset the expense which
It causes. ' .. Vi,
. And so, every where, In city , and
country, prohibition Is being adopted
and will be a permanent policy. It
will be permanent simply because It
pays. It Is money In the pockets of
taxpayers,' as a whole. It keeps down
expenses, i
The next great reform, after nation
wide prohibition, will be the removal
of the tax exemption from church
property. The church Is engaging In
business everywhere, giving public en
tertainments for pay, serving dinners
and conducting fairs and sales fur pay,
thus invading the business realm and
people will soon sny If It Is a business
Institution that It must bear Its share
of taxes.
And so the East Oregonlan sincerely
Relieves that within a few years, the
billions of dollars of church property
In the ITnlted fUates will be paying Its
Just shuro of taxes In the support of
the government.
Where the church organizations
take an active part In business, poli
tics and the economic life of the na
tion, they get away from the original
conception of religion as held by those
old patriots who exempted church
property. . '
The modern Idea of religion has
changed Its status In government and
, an government will be forced to change
Its attitude toward religion and Instead
of exempting billions of dollars' worth
of magnificent property the govern
ment will sny to this property that It
must bear an eiiuni portion of the
burden of government.
It la ulo an economic waste to al
low nmKnlflrent property In the heart
Of cities to escape taxation while the
toller with but a pittance, the widow
svlth a small homo, the. hard-work!ng
tradesman with his monger Income,
must all pay (axes to support govern
ment. Justice and sound economic
principles will lie appyrd to this sub
ject next, nnd It will be changed to
tilt changed conditions of society.

. A reeent conversation with Thomas
II. I'arkrr, familiarly knoan as "liar
, IT." of North Powder, and for the
past Itvo yesre the chief gusfdlan of
our Due mountain forests, gave us
Itmrh ratine for reflection,
Mr. Parker's principles regarding
eve-sl (hinge savoring of outdoors
eem to us worthy of promulgation,
and n gladly take this opportunity to
prewnt them to all fair-minded men.
Hal J Mr. Parker: "I have been In
the woods constantly for two years,
and In that time I have carried no
firearms of any description at any
time. Tills year I am carrying a
camera, and find a great deal of pleas
ure In getting pictures of lha wild
.creatures. I much prefer the camera
io Ihe gun as a mean of enjoying
myself." tier we broke In with a
question a to what effect the failure
!f the Isst legislature to protect game,
tiad. "Mr, Parker replied:" '
"Many game hogs visited the moun
ts I as at all seasons last year, and
scores of deer were needlessly slaugh
tered, merely to satisfy the blond lust
r$J go-called sportsman. Deer were
killed In season and out of season.
While the failure of our lawmakers to
dtj their, duty left elk unprotected for
only SO days, many were killed. They
have been rapidly Increasing in num.
j 'Xirs until last fall. I saw them every
week, but have seen none this spring.
It seems to me that It would be a very
good idea to protect these magnificent
creatures for another period of years.
I am working hard to have a bill in
troduced at the next session of our
legislature that will protect our game
more effectively than ever before." "

Occasionally the question Is heard,
"Will the republicans elected to . the
legislature upon the statement No. 1
pledge . vote for Chamberlain for
United States senator?" There should
be no question about It. Of course
they will. The people of Oregon fiave
said that they wished Mr. Chamberlain
to represent them In the United States
senate, and their rights and wishes
must be respected by all members of
the legislature who subscribed to
statement No. 1. Any member who
subscribed to statement No. "I and
falls to make good his promise should

the society of honest men. , It Is un
doubtedly a bitter dose for a repub
lican to be compelled to vote for a
democrat for united States senator,
but the member ,. of the legislature
should have taken this possibility Into
consideration when he subscribed to
the statement it is too late ' now.
One thing Is certain. The republican
member from Union county will be
found In the column 'supporting the
people's choice. , .
