the exercises of the 26th annual com
mencement wilt bring the work of
Whitman college to a close for the
year, and the students wtll scatter
over the Northwest for a three
month's vacation.;

lege, Friday evening, June 5. On Sat
urday" students, faculty and alumni
will board a special train for the an
nual college picnic at Walllatpu, the
scene of the Whitman mission and
Massacre. On the same evening will
occur the graduation exercises of the
Conservatory of Music. This Is the
first time that the conservatory har
had serrate graduation exercises, and
U a mark of the growth of the music
department of the institution.
The baccalaureate sermon will be
preached Sunday morning by Presi
dent Penrose, arid in the evening, the
Rev. E. A. Paddock of Weiser, Idaho,
will preach the annual sermon to the
Christian associations of the college.
On Monday evening the New York
Symphony orchestra under Walter
Damrosch will play, and Mr. Dam
rosch will lecture in the chapel In the
afternoon. ' Tuesday is class day, when
the usual senior play will be present
ed. The commencement program will
close with the exerclsee on the lawn,
followed by the council dinner at
Reynolds hall.
At the meeting of the board of trus
tees Tuesday the new constitution will
be up for adoption, and the new board
of overseers, made up of the most In
fluential business and professional
men of the northwest, will be appoint

The'telephone line from Starkey to
Sheep Ranch Is complete, and a force
will begin In a few days to extend the
line to Sumptor, a distance of a little
more than 10 miles. Probably a line
from ' Hldaway Springs to Susanvllle,
40 miles, will be built this summer.
