Portbiml News Letter Explain Open-
liiS ry of lVstival.
Portland, June 1. (Special corres
pondence.) The P'.n-t!and Rose feml-
vol opened vflth all Portland In a hol-
Iduy humor, flower-wreathed windows
and rosea In evidence everywhere.
Thousands of visitor from 'outside
point are in tho city, and Incoming
crowds are greeted by on Iramonn
Arch of Welcome erected ut the ap
proach to the union station. The Most
tuito fleet lies at anchor in the har
bor, an excursion of over 100 people,
under the aunplces of the Sacramento
Valley Development league, arrive this
morning from the South. Washing
ton la (lending generous delegations
and an excursion Is expected from
Lewlston, Idaho, tomorrow morning.
The whole northwest feels that In ad
dition to the Innumerable purely at
tractive features' of the celebration,
the 'event Is a marvelous advertise
ment of the climatic conditions, for
nowhere else In the world can flow
ers bo found more beautiful than the
rosea of the Xorth Pacific coast.' The
grand parades will exceed anything
ever shown on the coast, and besides
all the leading towns 'of Oregon, Wash
ington will be represented iu wu'So;!:
and decorated vehicles.
When the Oregon Development
league recently asked the co-operation
of the state in milking a comprehens
ive exhibit of the products of the Pa
cific northwest, heartiest assurances
of help came from every quarter, but
before definite arrangements could be
completed the trustees of the Com
mercial club building were offered a
five year's rental of $21,000 for the
exhibit room and felt compelled to ac
cept this In Justice to the stockholders.
But the officers of the league say that
their plan will yet materialize.
Both the Pacific Monthly magazine
and Sunset appear as special Rose Fes
tival numbers for June. Nothing
proves the activity of Oregon and
Washington communities so forcibly
as a glance through the advertising
sections of these coast-published magazines.
Mnaufacturers in all parts of the
United States seem to be taking a new
Interest in the Investigation of the
condition here In the northwest, and
especially Is this true of the factory
which represents a moderate Invest
ment. From every city of any size on the
coast delegates have come to Port
land to attend the session of the Pa
cific Coast Ad Men's association. It
Is being held In the Convention hall of
the Commercial club building, and the
association will enjoy a unique dinner
at the club tonight their banquets are
probably the most unusual and Inter
esting given by any convention they
have been compared to similar affairs
of the famous Gridiron club of Wash
Ington and since the Portland ad men
claim to have the largest advertising
club In America, they are making spe
cial effort as hosts.
A communication went out last
week from the Portlund Commercial
club to the organizations of the state
asking for a supply of literature Issued
by each community. Special files of
these publications are kept for the In
formation and benefit of newcomers,
who ntiturally come to the larger cities
first and to whom such a distribution
bureau will bo of the utmost advan
tngo. The whole Pacific northwest Is
Included in the scope of this work.
Court Pit Tomorrow.
The Juno term of the circuit court
will sit tomorrow morning to pick up
the work of the term, which Is not
very extensive this time. The full
