To Build Eagle Road.
At last all doubts concerning the
building of the Eagle Valley railway
are removed, says the Baker City
Democrat. ' .
Yesterday A. B. Jacobs, chief engi
neer of the construction company that
Is to build the road, arrived In the city
from Cincinnati, O., and to a Democrat
representative he gave out the state
ment that construction work would
begin about July 1.
, Mr. Jacob's principal business In
Baker City at this time Is to file the
trust deed and mortgage upon which
bonds are to be Issued and for which
all arrangements have been definitely
mado. -This Is certainly good news to
the people of Baker county, especially
those of the east end of the county,
who see In the operation of a railway
the beginning of a wonderful advance
ment and development of all that rich
country east of Baker City to Snake
river, which possesses untold wealth
In' minerals, fruitgrowing, agriculture
and stockgrowlng.
More Testimonials.
The efficiency of the . Tennessee
singers who will be brought to La
Orande next .Thursday ntgnt unuer
auspices of the local Elks, was highly
pleasing to Portland, where the troupe
appeared. , The following Is what a
prominent Portland minister says of
them:
"The program was received with
tremendous enthusiasm," "completely
capturedthe audience," "are artists."
"Have rich melodious voices and know
how to use them." "Large crowd
voted unanimously their Indorsement
and Invited them to come again."
"Hear them once and you will want
to hear them again."
DR. J. WHITCOMB BROUGHER."
Prohibition Speaking.
Rev. W. H. Gibson of La Grande,

of this city In the Methodist church
Tuesday evening, in the Interests of
the local option campaign. Music for
tho occasion was furnished by the El
gin band. The leaders In the local
option movement expect to hold an
open air rally In this city tomorrow
afternoon at which time several

Dmlre Anglo-Frrrtrh Alliance.
London, May 19.' President Fai
lures of France, said he regretted he
was unable to establish a formal Anglo-French
alliance. The real object
of his visit to England at this time
being for that purpose. He said:
"The English and French have
much In comman and the feeling In
France la most friendly to England.
Such an alliance would result In
much good."
It Is believed here that King Ed
ward wanted an alliance, but could
not find means satisfactory to all In
terests. '
Fruit Crop Heavy.
From Alphonse Santos, an authority
on fruit and vegetable culture, living
on Mill creek, several miles from this
city. It Is learned that the apple yield
this year will be medium to full crop;
cherries, full yield; apricots, full yield;
li-year-old peach trees are too full;
strawberries medium crop. Mr. San
dos has a fine fruit and vegetable
ranch on Mill creek and has helped
supply Dalles markets for more than
10 years. The Dalles Chronicle.
