COMPLIMENTS ARE MANY.
Press of (lie Slate Praise Tennessee
Singers Coming Here. '
. Compliments, praise and testimon
ials of the colored jubilee singers that
will come to La Grande under, the
auspices of the local Elks next Thurs
day night, are many. , Following is
one of them:
"Appearing on the platform in Over-'
alls and blouses and colored mother
hubbard like dresses, with red hand
kerchiefs around' their heads like the
ol southern "mammies" used to wear
away down where the' cotton fields
bloom In whiteness, and . bringing a
breath from sunny south, the Tennes
see Jubilee singers, who appeared at
the First Methodist church last night,
made an instantaneous hit and cap
tured the hearts of the large and ap
preciative audience. ' In spite oft the
inclemency of the weather there was
an excellent crowd out But those who
went were glad that Jupiter Pluvlus
did not discourage them for their re
ward was such as is given to those who
dare to tak,e a good opportunity when
It comes their way. The company of
Jubilee singers number' eight and the
way they sing does trie weary , heart
good. One does not hear the old and
worn out popular airs that are thread,
bare, but the songs thai, porno .near to
the heart and are ever favorites suph
as "Steal Away to Jesus," "There's a
Jubilee," "Swing Low Sweet Chariot;
"Roll, Jordan. Roll" and "Peter, Go
Ring Dem Bells." Dally Oregon

City of Stone Age Unearthed.
A Berkeley dispatch of May 26 says
Burled a few feet under the classic
soil of the university of California Ilea
a city of the stone age, whose mas
stve walls respond to the instrument
of the members of the Berkeley Socie
ty of Physiological Research, and how
their well defined locations, according
to the Investigations made by Profes
sor Joseph Voyle, president of the lo
cal Psychical society and other mem
bers. The stories of investigations to
find the lines of the burled city, which
antedates by thousands of years the
time of Cqlumbus, have been carried
on. It Is said, quietly for the last month
since the society took up this Import
ant branch of their studies.
None of the professors of the uni
versity have as yet thoroughly inves
tigated the findings of the society, but
It Is likely that If their discoveries are
found to hrve a foundation excavation
work will be begun at once along
scientific lines.
FootbaU First Played In China.
Football, according to Professor
Stuart Culln, an expert on games,
was first played In China. A curious
and ancient Chinese drawing unearth
ed by this Investigator shows a prime
minister playing football with a king
and two chamberlains. The time Is
th tenth century, but long before that
date football was recognised In China
an exercise for soldiers. In the
eighth century football wan Introduced

became very popular In the Japan of
