j GETTING A HOME EDUCATION.
( . The Columbia (Mo.) Herald gives'
): the following entertaining nia-UHtlc
' ' on homo education. This little Itom
4 should carry the University ' of bre-
; gon appropriation, The Herald says;
i "How much does a Missouri boy
' cost? Fathers and guardians with
boys to bring up estimate that $3000
will rear to manhood the average MIs-
- - sourl boy, will send hlin seven months
t t -1 t . . . ...
, . trlet school,' four years to high school
i ' and four years to college or unlver-
;.. ity. , '.
This Amount will cover his food,
clothing, books and stationery. It
: will even permit a margin for "toin
foolneKg," as one father picturesquely
i styles amusements.
"The cost of the' state is, on the av
erage, I7BO ror eacn boy. or this
amount 18tJ is for the elementary
school, 1180 for the high school and
$100 a year for four years at the uni
versity;! The state pnys $7.40 and the
parent pays $2240, and the net result
fs one Missouri boy. educated In Mis
sour' schools fur life."
It' Is truly something to educate a
boy at home, as the Herald says, to
give him an Oregon training, an Ore
, gon spirit, and Oregon-made citizen
hip. '.
'Home pride and patriotism should
cause Oregonlans to enthusiastically
support their state university. In ths
knowledge that It will put the Oregon
' brand on ths minds and characters of
young men and women!
FOR COUNTY TREASURER.
J
The taxpayers of Union county in
i ins psai nave reason to ds congratu
'' .- Uted upon their choice of a man to
' car for the money. And again this
' same man who In the past has so effl-
clently watched over their Interests Is
agaln to be treasurer of Union county.
For many moons John Frawley has
been the caretaker of the county
funds and at no time has rwr been
unfaithful to his trust Again the re
publican party tnkes pleasure In plac
ing him upon Its tlrket, fully believing
that his Tecord In tho past will ' bv
sufficient recommendation for the
future.
,
FOR CIRCUIT JUDGE.
In placing J. W. Knowles In nomi
nation for the offire of circuit Judge,
' the republican party has made a wise
choice. Mr. Knowles hss been a rest
. 1ont of this district a sufficient length
of time to make him properly so
lttalntd with the conditions to enable
Mm to administer Justice to all parts
of the district. He Is a firm believer
In the enforcement of all laws, and
Ms ability as an exponent of ths law
Is too well established to need com
ment. Ths Observer takes pleasure In
giving him Its support as It believes
that his administration will be a cred
itable one.
FOR REPRKKKNTATIVE.
, The republican candidate fur repre
sentative needs no Introduction to ths
voters of Union Vwunty. For ths past
quarter of a century he has been a
resHent business man of this county.
Ills reputation as a conservative bus
iness man Is such that no one ques
tions but that If H. F. Richardson has
the aMU'y and thn slaving qualities
to properly represent Union county,

Grande justice of the peace and con
stable district, is a man of ability and
sterling worth. He has been a' resi
dent of La Grande a number of years
and In a graduate of the Ann Arbor
law school, He Is In every way thor

With credit to himself, the party and

Pciulk'ton Takes Third Gnme.
Pendleton, May 27. (Special.)
The third game In the Walla Walla-
Pendleton series on the letter's
grounds, went to Pendleton yesterday
by a score of 4 to 0. The gams was
a fast snappy exhibition, and the Us'
of the series thus far.
Shifting In Position.
The dally ace-saw and shifting of
the clubs has started in earnest. Be
cause Pendleton took the third yes

Wnlla Walla a notch, so there Is now
a well defined line of demarkatton
between all the teams. La Grande Is
still alone at tho top of tho column.
