BANKRUPTCY
"Bankruptcy follows prohibition,"
say the liquor men. Testimony from
business men from Maine "to Wallowa
county, Oregon, show business benefit
ed by closing saloons. Who goes
bankrupt?
The brewer, unless he goes Into
some useful business. Do not worry
over him. He has built great build
ings with money gotten from drink
ing men whose families have suffered
and whose lives have been wrecked.
The distiller. He must change busi
ness or go broke. The whisky trust
one of the greaumt ui cscrt tnii.
may be dissolved by prohibition. Who
will weeo?
Tho saloonkeeper. If he will not
work at some honorable calling, he
goes broke.
What does the community lose, by
his bankruptcy? Will any wife and
children go cold or hungry? He can
turn to useful employment and be
happier.
The brothel. Yes, these dens can
not prosper In a dry country. No won
der that harlots favor saloons. The
poor deluded inmates must turn from
crime to honorable living or move to
license towns.
Say, wouldn't some of this bank
ruptcy be a good thing?
BUI PICS W
Saloon sympathizers are saying thui
law cannot bo enforced," that "blind
pigs" will openly run In La Grande In
defiance of tho luw and ihe people.
L'llnd pls are only possible when"
tho citizens are blind and the officials
.re also conveniently blind.
The criminals who operate "blind
plffs" are wise enough to know when
sworn officers of the. law will enforce
tho law and when law-breaking will
be winked at and even encouraged b
corrupt and dlHhnnorublc men in pub
lic offices.
Every argument in fvor of the li
censed saloon because of "blind pigs"
Is an Insult to the manhood, patriot
ic and local officers of La Grande.
If we want anarchy let us end th
fnrce of representative government.
If we believe In republican govern
ment let us Insist that law must be
enforced agnlnst all criminals, and
with equal Justice to all citizens. The
;reat corporations and the saloons
have no more right to violate the law
than any ordinary citizens.
Tho "blind pig" argument Is a con
fession of weakness. It Is cowardly,
contemptible, un-Amerlca, Illogical
absurd, criminal.
Truth crushed to earth will rise again;
The eternal fields of Hoil are hers:
Hut error writhes a while In pain,
And die among his worshipers.
Rut rlKht !h right, since God Is God,
And rl;ht the day will win:
To doubt would be disloyalty
To fuller would bu sin.
Coventor Hoke Kmllli, OomTria.
