EM'upcd Jail by Want Ad.
Utlca, N. T May 23. The efficacy
of want "ads" has again been demon
strated by John L. Bllber, a young
man of this city, who has recently boon
making a tour of the west. Accord
ing to reports received by friends of
Ellber, he. was arrested In Newklrk,
Okla., and sent to Jail. Friendless and
almost penniless, the young man con
ceived the idea of appealing to the
publio throuKh a want "ud." He
spent his last quarter for the insertion
in an Oklahoma City paper of the fol
lowing advertisement:
' Wanted Young man In Jail wants
rout Suggestions solicited that might
lend to his immediate releaM. .
The response was immediate. Sev
eral prominent attorneys Interested
themselves In Sllber's case and Gover
nor Haskell of Oklahoma, was Induced
to Issue a pardon.

BIG SUCCESS
The locar option meeting In the rink
last night was all that the most ar
dent friends of prohibition for, Union
county asked or expected. Such a
demonstration has never before been
seen In La, Grande and we doubt
whether eastern Oregon has equalled
it. ' - '
The La Grande- band was out for
the occaslna and rendered a somber

at the rink. The people cams In
crowds and they were people wne are

ica" and the speaking began. Later
C. E. Cochran sang "Oregon, V Ore
gon," using the new version, which
tells of a saloon-less state. It was a
hit, as was also the "New Star Span
gled Banner" rendered by W. K. Da
vis. We cannot refer to each speech
separately. The very names of the
speakers 1 ml rente a very strong pres
entation of the subject. The question
was vlffwed: from the poiwrcnl, buat
ness, physlofoglval and moral stand
points. No Insults were hnrled at the
saloonkeeper.
Calmly, yet earnestly, the speakers
presented the claims ot business, so
ciety, the home, and Ood. for the
abolition of the liquor traffic. The
applause that punctuated their re
marks shewed a sympathetic audience.

220 PICKERS
That there will be a demand for 220
cherry pickers more than now avail
able at Cove. Is the remarkable facts
given by C. M. Stacktand of Cove, who
is here today, The cherry crop is so
far advanced that the picking will be
started about July 12, unless extreme
ly hard frosts ruin the prospects
-within a few days. - This is hardly
possible andgrowers from that sec
tion of the valley say the crop will be
remarkably large. The pickers will be
in such great demand that something
new In the way of advertising tor help
must be resorted to. Mr. Btackland
alone will need 40 pickers this year.
The strawberry crop at Cove Is like
wise promising, though the first pick
ing will be late. ' This is due to the
fact that the early blossoms were
nipped by frost and toe growers must
depend on the latter varieties.
Among the Cove Visitors to , La
Grande today were G. &. Btackland,
C. M. Stackland, Mr. and Mrs. William
Martin, Dr. and Mrs. E. Martin, Mr.
McNeil and family, William ' Ogden
and family, Casper Anderson, "Arthur
Conley, A. B. Conley, J'oh'n Jones,
"Dad" Chambers, Paul Comstock, Mrs.
B. Benton and Tod Rees.' ':'
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Campbell of I ru
bier came to do their week's shopping
this morning. .
"Buster" Erown, formerly with the
N. IC AVet store, but now on a Ladd
Canyon farm, Is one of the many far
mers from his section of the valley
who are here today.

Hi
began to move around more pleas
antly. The committee might have present
ed a parade this afternoon of consid
erable attraction', but nothing wns
done. Jn the four hours' time a dozen
or even more automobiles could have
been brought Into a parade headed by
the baud, and thus have made some
pretext at holding a parage. How
ever, the argument advanced by. the
committee this 'morning Is a logical
one. namely, that to have made a

would ruin the possibilities attendant
upon a first-class parada which they
