SENATOR LA POLLETTE.
Senator La Follette Is a leader. He
led the people of Wisconsin In a fight
which has lasted eight years, to re
cover self-government In thst state,
and, though he got "results," though
he, like Roosevelt, put through laws
In the common interest, and aroused
the people to a vision of the system,
the one great achievement of La Fol-
lette's leadership Is this:
The people of Wisconsin rule the
state of Wisconsin. La Follette has
made them so clear and so self-reliant
that they won't let even La Follette
boss them. Now they have a repre
sentative democracy . In Wisconsin.
And that Is why we have In La Fol
lette a United States senator who- tries
to represent not Interests; not Wis
consin; ' not ven the people of Wis
consin, but all the people of all the
United States. Lincoln Steffens.
Columbia Is Rising.. .
The upper Columbia Is . rising at
every point from which data Is re
ceived by the weather bureau.- Ex
cept at Lewlston, the Snake Is also
rising at the various towns. t How
ever, there have been none of those
phenomenal rises and but little fear Is
son. In fact, the best information at
hand indicates that the annual rise
of 'the Columbia will be below the
average unless there should be a pro
tracted period of warm weather. - It
Is explained that the snow In the
mountains Is not ' sufficient to make
much of a flood unless it should all
be melted In the course of about two
weeks. The Dalles Chronicle.
