Prohibition threatens 28 of Oregon's
tt counties In the election June 1, says
the Portland Oregonlan. In every
county except Baker, Multnomah, Clat
sop and Benton which Is already dry
elections have been called on coun
dy prohibition. Seven of these coun
ties are now dry Curry, Lane, Lin
coin, Linn, Sherman, Tillamook, Wal
Iowa and Yamhill. In wet Multnomah
21 precincts will vote on the liquor
ban; in Baker three precincts and in
Clatsop, four.
It appears, therefore, that there is
only one county which, will not be
confronted with ' a prohibition elec
tlon anywhere in its borders Benton
and in that county the liquor trade
Is already prohibited. Antl-prohlbl
tionists evidently have no hope of lift
tng the liquor ban there, since they

The outlook causes liquor! manufac
turers and dealers much alarm. They
behold disastrous curtailment or ruin
of their business staring them in the
face. They would dread state prohi
bition far less, since many persons
would oppose turning the state dry
who are willing to prohibit liquor sell
ing In their home precinct or county.
County prohibition shuts out home
manufacturers and dealers from the
dry area, but not those In other state?.
Consequently, prohibition helps the
outside trade and shuts off the busi
ness of the home brewers and dealers.
Quite naturally, the makers ant',
traders of liquor will offer, what re
sistance they can. But they are in thr
unfortunate position of being unabh
to make an aggressive fight for thel"
cause, for fear of making prejudice
and storing up popular enmity. They
say thtlr foes misstate the facts, am'
the Issues, and by appeal to popular
passion, make reply largely futile.
Still, the anti-prohibition forces wll
make what fight they can, seeking to
avoid rancorous conflict.
Prohibitionists anil other saloon
fighters find much satisfaction in th
prospect. Without bringing up the
Issue of state prohibition for which
they think their cause not yet pre
paredthey have caused elections In
all but a small part of the state, anil
If successful, will prohibit the liquor
traffic everywhere but In Multnomah.
Clatsop and Baker, In which, however,
there will be dry precincts. They say
they aro preparing for state p-ohlbl-tlon
and that In a few years, perhnps--in
two, they will have "cleaned up" so
ninny counties that state prohibition
will be only a short step forward from
that stage.
The only counties not confronted
with prohibition are Multnomah, Clat
sop and Baker. . In Multnomah. IS
precincts will vote on prohibition,
which. If cari lcfl. will make practically
all of East Portland and eastern Mult
nomah dry. In Clatsop four prcfincts
will vote on the question, three of
them In Astoria; In Buker, three pre
cincts will vote on the lliiuor question.
All dry counties are now Benton.
Curry, Lane, Lincoln, Linn, Shcrmun,
Tillamook, Wallowa, Yamhill.
All wet counties are: Grant. Harney.
Josephine, Klamath, Polk and Wash
